Georgia murder suspect captured after manhunt shuts down I-65 in south Alabama
A Georgia murder suspect was taken into custody on I-65 in south Alabama, an arrest that shut down the interstate for more than an hour.
Mike Thomas, 28, of Stockbridge, Ga., was captured Monday morning after an overnight manhunt.
The ordeal began Sunday night when Evergreen police officers tried to make contact with Thomas in Conecuh County after learning he was wanted for murder in Georgia, according to ALEA Senior Trooper Joshua Thompson.
Officers attempted to stop Thomas; however, he refused, and a pursuit ensued.
The pursuit ended about 5:30 a.m. Monday once spike strips were deployed just inside Baldwin County on I-65 near the 45 mile marker, ultimately disabling the suspect’s vehicle.
Thomas exited his vehicle and then attempted to carjack another vehicle that was stopped in traffic.
After the unsuccessful carjacking attempt, Thomas fled on foot into a nearby wooded area, Thompson said.
ALEA’s Aviation Unit, the Alabama Department of Correction’s K-9 Team, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit, along with multiple law enforcement agencies, all assisted in the manhunt and capture.
Eventually, Thomas was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for a medical evaluation.
Thompson said ALEA agents, at the request of the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, have also launched an investigation into an assault and robbery that happened on Sunday on I-65 near the 41 mile marker in Baldwin County in which Thomas is the suspect.
The investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office.
