Georgia 5-year-old dead, crushed by tree in storms
Thursday’s round of deadly storms wrecked havoc in Georgia, upending trees and powerlines and killing a 5-year-old south of Atlanta.
WSB is reporting that the Butts County Coroner confirmed a 5-year-old died Thursday after being crushed by a tree.
The child was a passenger in a car was driving down Haley Road in Jackson, about 50 miles southwest of Atlanta, when a tree fell on the car and crushed the child.
One other person in the car at the time is in critical condition, the coroner said.
Elsewhere, a tornado warning kept students stuck at middle schools in Griffin, Ga. until late in the night.
FOX5 reported some children at Kennedy, Cowan Road, Rehoboth Road, and Carver middle schools in Spalding County were stuck past midnight after emergency officials say roads became unsafe for school buses to travel.
School officials say parents were allowed to pick up their children, but those who relied solely on buses to get home were being held there. About 28 staff members were on hand to care for the children.
On Thursday, a round of tornadoes in Alabama were responsible for at least six fatalities in Autauga County.
Ernie Baggett, the emergency management director in Autauga County, told The Associated Press he could confirm six fatalities were scattered across multiple homes in the Old Kingston community. Baggett said mobile homes and conventional homes were both damaged.
