George Washington exhibit, artifacts coming to Alabama’s American Village
A large collection of President George Washington artifacts is coming to Montevallo.
The Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington, in Columbiana, will be relocated to the American Village, in Montevallo. The Harrison museum, founded by descendants of George Washington, includes heirlooms passed down through generations.
“We are very excited to have this amazing collection coming to American Village. The addition of the Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington to the American Village campus will expand our opportunities to allow students and citizens to engage in the study and appreciation of America’s founding history,” said Col. Alan B. Miller, president and CEO of American Village
The museum’s collection includes art and artifacts from the colonial period to 1865, such as paintings, letters, furniture, porcelain, glassware, silver, jewelry and busts.
The Washington family’s estates feature 18th and 19th-century furniture, such as coin-silver utensils, Minton porcelain, Sevres vases, and a walnut gaming table with tulip and rosewood inlay. The museum’s oldest item is Colonel Daniel Parke’s handwritten will, which married Martha Duncan and George Washington.
The Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington is expected to house the largest collection of Washington’s artifacts outside of their home site at Historic Mount Vernon, in the East Wing of Independence Hall, which is currently under construction in American Village.
“I am extremely pleased to have this collection of Washington family heirlooms, which my family has lovingly passed from one generation to the next, find a new home at American Village. Our family’s wish was that the collection stay here in Shelby County, and we cannot think of a better steward of these items than American Village,” said Helen Harrison Phillips, the daughter of Karl C. Harrison.
The Washington objects will be incorporated into an updated and expanded section of the Village, which is expected to open in 2026.
