Gardendale man dies month after Jefferson County road-rage shooting; suspect still at large

A Gardendale man injured in a road-rage shooting last month has died.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday identified the victim as Joseph Keith Alexander. He was 54.

The search for the suspect – Javier Brykese Burney – continues.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday, May 16, were called about 2:45 p.m. to the Palmerdale Fire Department on Bradford Trafford Road a report of a person shot in a reported road rage incident.

The shooting occurred in the 7400 block of Narrows Road, but Alexander was taken to the fire station for assistance.

Witnesses told authorities Alexander and his passenger were driving on Narrows Road when they noticed a vehicle following them closely. The man then pulled over his vehicle while the other vehicle also stopped.

Alexander approached Burney and an argument ensued, sheriff’s officials said.

Burney is accused of firing a shot that struck Alexander in the abdomen.

Alexander was taken to UAB Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition until he was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. Monday.

Burney, 26, is charged with attempted murder. He remains at large.

Court records list a Pleasant Grove address for Burney.
