THREE THINGS TO LOOK FOR
1. Who wins the quarterback battle?
Jax State will square off against one of the best quarterbacks it’s seen this season in FIU’s Keyone Jenkins. The 2023 CUSA all-freshman team honoree has thrown for 1,776 yards this season to go along with 14 touchdowns; his passing touchdowns mark ranks second in Conference USA. He’ll square off against Tyler Huff, who leads the conference in total yards (2,527) and ranks third in rushing yards (826), accounting for 19 total touchdowns.
2. Will Cam Vaughn continue to make an impact?
One of the top emerging talents in the Group of Five, Vaughn’s Hail Mary touchdown grab to force overtime against Louisiana Tech was one that made plenty of national headlines; it was also enough to earn plenty of Pop Tarts. While it was his most clutch play so far this season, the Georgia native has emerged as Jax State’s top target with 32 catches for 517 yards and three touchdowns. He’s been Jax State’s third highest-graded offensive player this season per PFF, with his 82.8 grade behind only Tre Stewart (87.4) and Huff (84.8).
3. How will Jax State handle one of the conference’s top defenders?
One of the top linebackers in the Group of Five this season, Travion Barnes has dominated in filling up the stat sheet. The Georgia Military transfer ranks third among all FBS athletes with 12.1 tackles per game this season, totaling 109 tackles (51 solo), 10.5 tackles for loss, four quarterback hurries, three sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception. He’s been the leader of an FIU defense that ranks 10th among all Group of Five schools, according to PFF, and has logged a tackle for loss in five of the last six games.
KEY MATCHUP
FIU receiver Eric Rivers vs. Jax State’s secondary
One of the top receivers in the Group of Five, Rivers is fresh off of a performance that saw him haul in 11 passes for a program-record 295 yards and three touchdowns against New Mexico State. He ranks 10th in the nation in total receiving yards (876) and 11th in yards per reception (20.37).
BY THE NUMBERS
35 — Jax State has totaled 35 rushing touchdowns this season, with that number tied for first among all FBS teams; undefeated No. 16 Army also has 35 this season.
