Gadsden man accused of kidnapping ex-girlfriend’s mother

A Gadsden man is in custody after authorities say he kidnapped his ex-girlfriend’s mother in north Alabama.

The suspect threatened suicide by cop during the hours-long ordeal on Friday and threatened to kill his hostage, authorities said.

Authorities identified him Saturday as Jason Larry Burns. He is 43.

It all began about 2:41 p.m. Friday when the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office received an urgent call reporting that a woman had been kidnapped at gunpoint and was being held hostage in a vehicle, Sheriff Joe Hamilton said Saturday.

Deputies went to the victim’s Lauderdale County home in the 27000 block of County Road 14. Once there, they found forced entry had been made and could not find anyone inside.

Sheriff’s officials requested help from the FBI and the U.S. Marshals, the sheriff said.

A short time later, investigators began monitoring phone calls between Burns and his ex-girlfriend.

Burns told his ex he had taken her mother and would kill her unless the ex-girlfriend met him in a trade-off. “The suspect also threatened ‘suicide by cop’ and to kill the hostage if stopped by law enforcement,’’ Hamilton said.

Over the next several hours, law enforcement officials were able to track Burns and his hostage through his phone calls to the ex-girlfriend, in which he repeatedly made threats to kill the hostage and himself.

Initially, the sheriff said, authorities were unable to identify with certainty the vehicle that the suspect was driving.

Around midnight, investigators were able to determine that Burns was in a rental vehicle and identified the make and model. He was monitored returning to his home in Gadsden.

Law enforcement officers converged at that residence, where they were able to rescue the hostage and take the suspect into custody.

Burns, the sheriff said, is believed to have ingested narcotics in an overdose attempt. He was taken to a Gadsden hospital where he is currently being guarded by Lauderdale County deputies.

The hostage received medical treatment on scene and is OK.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the investigation, including FBI negotiators and the FBI’s hostage rescue team, the U.S. Marshall’s Gulf Coast Region, Fugitive Task Force, ALEA’s SWAT and aviation teams, Florence and Gadsden police officers, and deputies with Lawrence County, Cullman County, Marshall County, and Etowah County.

Burns is charged with first-degree burglary and first-degree kidnapping. The sheriff said the investigation is ongoing and more charges are pending.
