Gadsden finalizing deal to land Whataburger location

Add Gadsden to the list of Alabama cities ready to welcome Whataburger.

Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford today said the city council is set to approve a deal to bring the Texas-based burger chain to town.

Though there’s no timetable for opening, construction on the $4 million project should begin within the next two to three months on an undeveloped site between Captain D’s and KFC/Taco Bell on East Meighan Boulevard.

The deal calls for the project developers to receive a 2% rebate of sales taxes over six years, or up to $515,000. It also involves the creation of a turn lane and deceleration lane, which could potentially open up another six acres of adjoining property to development, from East Meighan to Railroad Avenue and Elmwood Avenue.

The traffic improvements will come through a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district, a tool that allows municipalities to promote economic development using revenues from future funding streams.

Whataburger is currently expanding throughout Alabama, with a location in Albertville open this month and one announced for Jacksonville.

Whataburger already has 26 locations in Alabama and added a Madison restaurant in November.

Following the opening of a restaurant in Athens last year, the Albertville location was the second of 30 restaurants set to open through 2027 in partnership with MWB Restaurants, Whataburger’s local franchise group.

Whataburger also has locations in Alabaster, Athens, Auburn, Birmingham, Brewton, Chickasaw, Clanton, Daphne, Decatur, Foley, Fultondale, Homewood, Hoover, Huntsville, Leeds, Mobile, Montgomery, Opelika, Pelham, Saraland and Tuscaloosa.
