G.W. Long, Lindsay Lane, Vincent win in baseball quarterfinals
G.W. Long held off a dramatic rally in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game and swept St. Luke’s 11-1, 5-4 in their Class 2A quarterfinal series on Wednesday in Skipperville.
The Rebels (28-8) have won an AHSAA record 17 state championships. They will play either Pike Liberal Arts or Ariton next week.
G.W. Long led 5-0 in Game 2 before St. Luke’s scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Wildcats added another run in the seventh and had the bases loaded. However, William Bush came in and induced Will Spivey to pop out to end the game. Tanner Johnston got the win. He went 6.2 innings and allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out 10. Bush came on for the save.
Blayne Wood and Bryson Hughes both had two hits for the Rebels. Jake Neutze had two hits for the Wildcats (16-17). Turner Tillman drove in two runs. Chaz Evans went the distance, allowing three earned runs on nine hits. He struck out 10.
In the opener, Long scored two runs in the first, one in the second and four each in the third and fourth innings. James Kelly scattered five hits in five innings and didn’t walk a batter. Hayes Horne and Brody Walker each drove in two runs. Johnston was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Kyle Eddington took the loss for St. Luke’s. Cooper Frampton had two hits.
Ariton 7-4, Pike Liberal Arts 6-14
John Lott went 3-for-4 with four RBIs as Pike Liberal scored 14 runs on 11 hits and salvaged a split of their Class 2A quarterfinal baseball series with Ariton.
Levi DeBoer and Payne Jefcoat each drove in two runs for Pike. KC Bradford and DeBoer had two hits each. Will Rice pitched all five innings to get the win. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out five. Coleman Bragg, the first of four Ariton pitchers, took the loss. Connor Thrash had two hits and three RBIs for the Purple Cats.
Ariton won the first game in dramatic fashion when Caden Collier doubled in the winning run in the eighth inning. He finished with three hits and two RBIs in the game. Myles Tyler also had two hits and two RBIs. Bradford homered for Pike Liberal.
Game 3 is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday. The winner will play G.W. Long in the semifinals.
Vincent 2-11, Whitesburg Christian 1-1
Three Vincent pitchers scattered 10 hits in two games as the Yellow Jackets advanced to the 2A semifinals with a sweep of Whitesburg Christian.
Vincent (28-4) will play Lindsay Lane in a best-of-three series next week.
In the opener, Aiden Poe struck out eight and allowed four hits in seven innings. He didn’t walk a batter. The Yellow Jackets also managed just four hits off Luke Holbrook, but Cason Fields drove in two runs. Holbrook went 3-for-3 for Whitesburg Christian (18-13).
In the second game, Vincent scored a run in the first, two in the third, three in the fifth and four in the sixth to end the game. Grayson Gulde and Zac Carlisle limited Whitesburg to six hits and combined to strike out seven.
Easton Fields was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Gulde and Poe each drove in two runs.
Lindsay Lane 4-15, Donoho 0-4
Ray Anderson shut down Donoho on four hits in the first game and Lindsay Lane pounded out 15 runs in the second in advancing to the Class 2A semifinals.
The Lions (28-9) will play Vincent in the best-of-three semifinals next week.
Anderson struck out 12 and walked just one in a complete game in the opener. Lindsay Lane also had just four hits against Donoho’s Blake Sewell, who struck out six and walked six. Anderson, Ben Frasier, Trey Perkins and Jackson Carter each had RBIs for Lindsay Lane.
In the nightcap, the Lions scored six runs in the third and nine in the sixth on 10 hits. Perkins was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Alexander Cook, Anderson, Bryson Looney and Lane Jones all drove in two runs each. Frasier got the win in relief. Nic Thompson was 3-for-4 for Donoho. Hayes Farrell added two hits.
