Funeral for 3 family members killed in Birmingham mass shooting to be held Saturday

Funeral plans have been announced for three family members killed in a Birmingham mass shooting at an adult birthday, including a woman and her grandson.

A joint service will be held at Boutwell Auditorium Saturday for Angela Weatherspoon, 56, Markeisha Gettings, 42, and Lerandus Anderson, 24. Weatherspoon was Anderson’s grandmother.

Gettings and Anderson both left behind children.

The three were among four people killed when gunfire erupted Saturday night at a private event venue in Birmingham where a birthday celebration was being held for Weatherspoon’s son.

The shooting also left 10 others injured.

Visitation for the trio will be held from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at Eastside Funeral Home in Woodlawn. Saturday’s service will be held at 11 a.m. at Boutwell, with burial to follow at Oakland Memorial Gardens.

Also killed was 39-year-old Stevie Andre McGhee. His funeral has not yet been announced.

The shooting happened just after 11 p.m. Saturday in the 3400 block of 27th Street North.

Birmingham police Deputy Chief Rodarius Mauldin said police quickly began receiving calls of multiple shots fired from the birthday party.

When officers arrived, they put out a max-emergency call for backup because of the large number of people gathered there. He described the scene as chaotic.

McGhee was found shot outside of the event venue. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:42 p.m.

Weatherspoon and Gettings were found shot inside the club. They also were pronounced dead on the scene at 11:42 p.m.

Multiple victims began showing up at area hospitals with gunshot wounds – some transported by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and others by private vehicle. Police initially said nine others were wounded but updated that number Sunday to 10.

Anderson was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:52 p.m.

A shooting less than six hours earlier left three people dead, including a mother and her 5-year-old son.

“Having seven murdered in a day and 10 injured is probably the most tragic day in my time with the Birmingham Police Department,’’ Police Chief Scott Thurmond said Sunday.

“There are too many families who have been devastated and destroyed because of gun violence in our city,’’ Thurmond said. “Everyone in this room, to be frank, is sick and tire of it and it has to stop today.”

No arrests have been made, and police and city officials have issued multiple pleas to anyone with information to come forward.

“The Birmingham Police Department’s investigation is better off with credible information that comes from the community,’’ Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the day following the shooting.

“Let me define how swift justice works – we can move at a very high speed to solve these cases and bring justice to these families, ‘’ he said, “but it moves faster if we get community buy-in, community support.’’

Woodfin on Wednesday reminded the community that a $25,000 reward is available for information that leads to an arrest in the death of Landyn or any Birmingham child.

The Gun Violence Against Children fund was created in 2021 when Woodfin issued a call to action after six children under the age of 10 were shot in the first six months of the year.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham police at 205-254-1764 and Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
