‘Fun dude’ Raekwon Davis joins the Colts’ defensive line
Asked to introduce himself to Indianapolis Colts fans during a press conference on Friday, defensive tackle Raekwon Davis said: “I got a high motor. I got great leadership. And just a fun dude. Just active, just love, love enjoying people and making people happy.”
The Colts probably didn’t sign Davis to a two-year, $14 million contract that included a $5 million signing bonus and $7 million on guaranteed money in NFL free agency because he’s a “fun dude,” but the former Alabama standout figures he’s going to fit right in with the Indianapolis defensive tackles, particularly Grover Stewart.
“I heard when the D-line coach called him, he was on a tractor,” Davis said. “I was thinking to myself, ‘That’s some stuff I’ll be doing if my D-line coach called me.’ Probably be on a tractor. Just having fun. Deer hunting in Mississippi somewhere.”
Davis figures to slot in behind Stewart and DeForest Buckner in Indianapolis’ defensive interior. The Colts re-signed Stewart to a three-year, $39 million contract last week, and Buckner is a three-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro who’s in the final season of a four-year, $80 million contract.
“Just to be able to play with them two guys is going to be great,” Davis said. “… I just feel like this is the best choice for me. The organization, I feel like, they opened their arms up and they just let me in, and they wanted me here. I feel like playing with Buckner and Grove, I feel like, it’s a great fit for me.”
Davis had spent his career with the Miami Dolphins, who selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
“When Miami drafted me, it was like every kid thinks that’s going to be your home,” Davis said. “And then after your four years are up, it’s still like a bittersweet thing going on. Now I’m here in this new place. I’m still doing the things I love to do. And my family gets to see me for another two years play in a different type of stadium doing something I love, so it’s great.”
In his first three seasons, Davis started 41 games for Miami. But that dropped to seven in 2023, when his time on the field declined from 585 defensive snaps in 2022 to 498.
The Colts play a different style upfront than the Dolphins did, Davis said.
“When (Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard) called me, he was like, ‘It’s a different scheme for you, and I feel like it fits you,’” Davis said. “And I thought to myself, I’m like, ‘Yeah, man, let’s switch it up. Let’s see what this new scheme can, what kind of opportunity it can put me in.’ I was willing to do it. …
“Here it’s not like two-gapping and just playing the gap and just sitting. Here, you’re just going and, you know, making plays.”
The Colts also re-signed safety Ronnie Harrison last week. Davis and Harrison were teammates for two seasons at Alabama, including the Crimson Tide’s CFP national-championship winner of the 2017 season.
“It’s fun,” Davis said. “It brings me back some Bama memories. Think about all that stuff we did together at Bama, and all the rings we had, so it’s going to be great, just seeing that guy, playing with that guy.”
