Fultondale police officer struck on I-65 while helping stranded motorist; 2 others also hospitalized
A Fultondale police officer was hospitalized Saturday morning after he was struck on Interstate 65 while assisting a stranded motorist.
The man who struck him and the female stranded motorist also were injured and taken to area hospitals. None of their injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
The crash happened at 4:43 a.m. on I-65 northbound between Fieldstown Road and Walker Chapel Road, said Fultondale Police Chief Marcel Walker.
Walker said the officer was assisting a stranded motorist and had two lanes blocked off while they were working to help her.
A man driving another vehicle went around the barriers and crashed into the officer’s vehicle. The officer’s vehicle then struck the officer.
The officer sustained a broken ankle. He is currently undergoing surgery at UAB Hospital.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is leading the investigation.
