Friday roundup: Vestavia Hills rips Tuscaloosa County; Montgomery Catholic tops Andalusia

Senior quarterback John Paul Head ran for 138 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 150 and another score as Vestavia Hills blanked Tuscaloosa County 45-0 on the road on Friday night.

The sixth-ranked Rebels (7-2 overall, 5-2 in Class 7A, Region 3) led 7-0 after one quarter, 24-0 at the half and 38-0 headed into the final period.

Vestaia rolled up 304 yards on the ground with Caden Taylor gaining 70 yards on seven carries and Charlie Taaffe getting 50 on six attempts. Head’s rushing yards came on 16 carries. He completed 13-of-18 passes. Head’s TD pass covered 26 yards to Cooper Mollison and his scoring runs were 51, 4 and 18 yards.

Vestavia also got a 1-yard TD run from Taylor and a 16-yarder by Taaffe. Owen Simpson kicked a 44-yard field goal.

Keown Richardson caught five passes for 83 yards and Mollison had 3 catches for 45.

Tuscaloosa County (4-5, 2-5) finished with 65 yards rushing and 21 through the air. Sophomore Chardarius Hutchins led the Wildcats with 42 yards on 17 attempts.

Vestavia will host Helena to close out the regular season next week, while Brookwood is at Tuscaloosa County.

Oxford 35, Center Point 14

Oxford pulled away in the fourth quarter to earn a bounce-back victory in response to last week’s loss to No. 1-ranked Clay-Chalkville.

Mason Mims completed 24-of-28 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns to lead Oxford (7-2 overall, 5-1 in Class 6A, Region 6). Damious Wilson caught six passes for 125 yards and a touchdown, while Nick Richardson and Camare Hampton had one TD catch apiece.

For Center Point (7-2, 4-2), Thermon Deon Moore threw for 120 yards, and Julius Finnerson ran for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Oxford jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but led just 21-14 in the fourth quarter before Oxford score the game’s final two touchdowns.

Both teams are heading to the playoffs, but still have one regular-season game remaining. Center Point plays at Leeds next week, and Oxford is at Jacksonville.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Jackson 45, Wilcox Central 0

The Aggies (8-0 Ooverall, 7-0 in Class 4A, Region 1), the No. 4-ranked team in 4A, wrapped up a perfect region slate and the championship with the rout on the road.

Freshman Ezavier Crowell went over 1,000 yards rushing for the season with a 61-yard touchdown run. The Aggies also got a rushing score from Jeremiah McKenzie (5 yards). Quarterback Landon Duckworth completed touchdown passes to Crowell (37 yards) and Nasir Powell (10 yards).

Powell had a 39-yard punt return for a TD, and Trey Morgan completed a 15-yard scoring pass to Isaiah Gladney. Jeramie Houston kicked a 27-yard field goal that opened the scoring.

Wilcox Central (1-8, 0-7) closes out the season next week at J.F. Shields. Jackson will finish the regular season at Davidson in Mobile.

STATEWIDE

Montgomery Catholic 27, Andalusia 14

Third-ranked Montgomery Catholic knocked off Class 4A No. 1 and defending state champion Andalusia at Catholic Field. The Knights rallied from a 14-0 deficit to capture the Region 2 title with the win, snapping the Bulldogs’ 14-game winning streak. Catholic held the visitors to their lowest scoring output of the season.

Andalusia’s 14 points were the most surrendered by the 10-0 Knights in the regular season that included seven shutouts. The winners averaged 43.5 points a game this year while allowing 3.2. Andalusia (9-1, 6-1) averaged 40 points a game in 2023 and gave up 9.5 per outing.

The win avenged Catholic’s 29-26 loss to Andalusia in last season’s state playoff semifinals.

Josh Griffin led the Knights with 137 yards on the ground on 20 carries. Quarterback Caleb McCreary ran for 120 yards with three touchdowns on 14 carries. He also threw a TD pass.

Catholic, 7-0 in region play, got 11 tackles – three for a loss – from Myles Khatri, who also had an interception. Jo Pierce had 10 stops for the Knights.

Brantley 54, Red Level 13

Brantley earned a second straight win as Jayden Parks accounted for five touchdowns at Brantley Field.

Parks finished 13-of-15 passing for 275 yards and three touchdowns, ran for a touchdown and returned an interception for a touchdown. Cooper Layton added four catches for 110 yards and 10 touchdowns and added two tackles to the lead the defensive effort for Brantley (5-4 overall, 5-2 in Class 1A, Region 2). Daylan Davis also had a TD reception.

Brantley plays Florala at home in next week’s regular-season finale, while Red Level (2-7, 2-7) plays at Samson.

Pike Road 43, Carver-Montgomery 22

Cason Myers completed 19-of-24 passes for 160 yards and rushed for a TD as Pike Road won the Class 6A, Region 2 title.

The Patriots improved to 7-2 and finished region play 6-0. Carver fell to 7-3, 5-1.

JaMichael Jones had 21 rushes for 80 yards with two touchdowns. Adrian Thornton had three rushes for 50 yards and a TD. Offensive lineman Desmond Harper had a fumble recovery for a TD

Jordan King got Pike Road started with a 68-yard interception return for a touchdown. Auburn commit Malik Blocton had seven tackles, two for a loss and four sacks. Mac Ceman had eight tackles, a sack and quarterback pressure. Braylon Outlaw had eight tackles, two for a loss and a sack. Cody Markham had an interception late in the game to seal the deal.
