Friday roundup: Huntsville, Hartselle rally for late wins
Huntsville staged an improbable late fourth-quarter rally on the road at Sparkman to force overtime, then won 35-28 in the second extra period when Marlin Jones Jr. plunged in from the 2 and Sims Bowman added the extra point for the Panthers’ only lead of the game.
Sparkman had a final opportunity on its possession in the second overtime, but Huntsville’s defense stripped the ball from Senators quarterback Josh Ward on first down and defensive back Benjamin Watson recovered to end the game and keep the Panthers’ postseason hopes alive in the 7A, Region 4 race.
Huntsville improves to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in region play. The Panthers host Austin in their final region game next week.
Sparkman (5-3, 3-3) lost its third in a row and saw its playoff hopes take a serious hit after watching Huntsville erase a 15-point deficit in the final 3:19 of regulation.
Jacks McClung threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to 6-foot-6 Chase Cartron to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive that cut the Senators’ lead to 21-13. After forcing Sparkman to punt from deep in its territory on the ensuing possession, Huntsville moved 44 yards in 10 plays to force overtime, with McClung coming up clutch with a 10-yard completion to Ashton Caldwell on fourth-and-10 at Sparkman’s 12.
McClung then connected with Garner Farrell for a 3-yard TD pass with 27 seconds remaining. Needing the 2-point conversion to tie, McClung scrambled right and found Wyatt Bloom alone in the end zone to make it 21-21.
Huntsville had a chance to win in regulation when Ramon White Jr. returned an interception to Sparkman’s 22 after the hosts drove into Huntsville territory in the waning seconds. After a delay of game penalty, the Senators blocked Bowman’s 44-yard field goal attempt to force overtime.
Sparkman cruised to a 21-3 lead at halftime as Ward had touchdown runs of 5 and 15 yards and a 25-yard TD pass to Jonathan Rozier. Huntsville’s only points before its late rally came on field goals of 38 and 29 yards by Bowman.
Star of the game: McClung went to the air 48 times, completing 24 for 156 yards with touchdown passes of 7 and 3 yards in the fourth quarter, plus the game-tying 2-point conversion. He completed passes to seven different receivers. “I was just glad the defense gave us a chance to win the game,” McClung said.
Play of the game: McClung calmly hit Caldwell across the middle on a fourth-and-10 from Sparkman’s 12 after Huntsville had taken its final timeout in regulation. He tossed a touchdown pass to Farrell four plays later and then hooked up with Bloom for the tying conversion.
Stat sheet: Huntsville – Jones ran for two touchdowns, a 1-yarder in the first overtime and a 2-yarder for what proved to be the game-winner in the second OT. The Panthers defense forced two turnovers and also blocked a punt that led to Bowman’s second field goal. Sparkman – Ward passed for 215 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The Senators outgained Huntsville 133-17 in the first quarter in building a 14-0 lead.
