Friday roundup: Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa tops McAdory, Spanish Fort wins

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa wrapped up its fourth unbeaten regular season, whipping McAdory 35-14 behind a dominating ground game at McAdory. Hillcrest had 54 rushing attempts for 376 yards, with Jamarian Johnson rolling to 262 yards on 29 carries with 4 touchdowns.

Hillcrest also compiled 10-0 regular seasons in 2016, 2011 and 1984.

Fourth-ranked Hillcrest (10-0, 7-0 in Class 6A, Region 4) led 14-0 at the half and 28-0 after three quarters. Johnson scored on runs of 4, 3, 8 and 13 yards. The Patriots also got a TD on a 1-yard Bryson Kimbrough run.

McAdory (5-4, 4-3) will be the No. 4 seed from Region 4. The Yellow Jackets scored on an 8-yard run by Rob Thomas and a 32-yard Jacob Clopton to JaCorey Whitted pass.

Clopton led McAdory with 73 yards on the ground on 13 carries. He completed 7-of-13 passes for 68 yards.

The Yellow Jackets host Calera next week to close out their regular season.

BIRMINGHAM

Vestavia Hills 59, Tuscaloosa County 18

The Rebels earned the No. 4 seed from Class 7A, Region 3 in Robert Evans’ first season as the Vestavia Hills head coach. The Rebels are 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the region with its regular-season finale at Helena next week.

Vestavia rolled to a 31-0 lead early in the second quarter and led 45-10 at the half.

John Paul Head threw five touchdown passes and had a 63-yard TD run on his way to a team-best 104 yards on the ground on 12 carries. Head completed 11-of-16 throws for 249 yards, with three TD passes to Keown Richardson for 53, 39 and 29 yards. Brady Johnson scored on a 20 yard pass play and William Tonsmierer had a 29-yard TD reception.

Jack Lockhard had 6 rushes for 99 yards and a 47-yard touchdown.

Richardson’s TD catches were his only receptions on the night as he lead the Rebels with 121 yards. Tucker Smitha caught 3 passes for 61 yards.

Carter Shirley kicked a 37-yard field goal for the winners.

Tuscaloosa County (5-4, 3-4) got a 3-yard TD run from Kevin Riley, who led the Wildcats with 58 yards on 18 attempts. Quarterback Braeden Smith had a 1-yard TD run. Smith completed 7-of-18 passes for 109 yards and was intercepted once.

Isaac Rodriguez kicked a 39-yard field goal with 13 seconds left in the first half for Tuscaloosa County.

The Wildcats close out the regular season next week at Brookwood.

Clay-Chalkville 52, Shades Valley 0

It started with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Mario Byrd and didn’t stop until midway through the fourth quarter as Class 6A’s second-ranked Cougars wrapped up the regular season with the Region 6 championship on the road.

The Cougars (8-1, 6-0) are idle next week as they await their first-round opponent.

Marlon Compton turned out to be the star of the night. He passed for a pair of touchdowns and ran for a 54-yarder to lead the Cougars’ ground game with 112 yards on four carries.

All six of Compton’s completions went to Mario Craver, who finished with 78 yards and a pair of touchdowns, 7 and 17 yards.

Allen Cotton added two more touchdowns, both coming after halftime on runs of 1 and 29 yards. He finished with 10 carries for 103 yards as Clay-Chalkville outgained Shades Valley on the ground 374-21.

Aaron Osley had 52-yard run that gave the Cougars a 32-0 halftime lead. Rodreckus Johnson added a 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

The loss likely ended the regular season for Shades Valley (5-4, 2-4).

Hewitt-Trussville 45, Chelsea 14

Class 7A sixth-ranked Hewitt-Trussville sprinted to 35 first half points in the Region 3 victory.

The Huskies (7-3, 5-2) got three scoring passes from Peyton Floyd and two interception returns for scores in the first half blitz.

Floyd threw touchdown passes to Brett Moseley, Jadon Loving and a 70-yarder for a 28-0 lead.

Braylon Chatman and Riggs Dunn returned interceptions for touchdowns.

Hueytown 68, Central-Tuscaloosa 0

Hueytown cruised to a 48-point halftime lead and emptied the bench.

Earl Woods was 5-of-8 for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns while Jakhael Rowser caught 2 passes for 115 yards, both touchdowns.

Tyree Hines ran a punt back 58 yards for a TD and Mikel Hines ran 30 yards for a score on a fumbled punt snap for Hueytown (6-3, 6-1).

Oak Mountain 9, Spain Park 3

Oak Mountain forced a pair of interceptions en route to keeping the Jaguars out of the end zone as the Eagles picked up their first win since late August to close their season on a high note.

Will O’Dell found Sawyer Smith for a 5-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to post all the points needed for the Eagles, who had lost seven straight games. While Garrett Murphy missed the extra-point attempt, he redeemed himself around 7 minutes later with a 41-yard field goal as the Eagles took a 9-0 lead into halftime.

William Lloyd kicked a 20-yard field goal for the Jaguars with 1:25 left in the third quarter.

Spain Park (2-7, 1-6 7A, Region 3) closes out its season next week at Pelham.

Barring a rash of disqualifications, Oak Mountain (3-7, 1-6) will miss the playoffs after making the postseason for back-to-back seasons.

Homewood 34, Briarwood 10

The Patriots won their third consecutive game to finish atop Class 6A, Region 3 with a 6-0 mark. Homewood is 7-2 headed into its regular-season finale at Jasper.

After a scoreless first quarter, Homewood exploded for a 20-7 halftime lead. Woods Ray hit 22-of-28 passes for 302 yards and 4 touchdowns – outdueling 5-star Clemson commitment Christopher Vizzina, who was 18-of-28 for 159 yards. Ray had 240 passing yards in the first half.

Jackson Parris caught 11 passes for 115 yards and a score while Hunter Drake had 3 catches for 102 yards and a TD. Charles Reeves had 5 catches for 52 yards and 2 touchdowns. Owen Isenhower had an 82-yard pass interception for a score for the Patriots.

Briarwood dropped to 3-6 after its fourth straight loss and 1-5 in the region. The Lions will host Fairhope next week.

American Christian 24, Montevallo 7

The Patriots closed out the Class 4A, Region 3 schedule in perfect fashion Friday night at home behind a three-touchdown effort from quarterback Kai Young.

Young passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Patriots (8-2, 7-0). He the first of two touchdown passes to Davis Dare, a 46-yarder, as American Christian took a 7-0 lead into the half that stood until the final quarter.

Young finished 20-for-30 passing for 257 yards and the two scores against one interception. He added five carries for 11 yards.

American Christian now awaits its first-round opponent as its idle next week. Montevallo (3-6, 3-4) finishes the season next Friday night hosting Tarrant in a non-region tilt.

MOBILE

Mobile Christian 34, Thomasville 7

The Leopards rolled up 34 unanswered points to close out their regular season with the Class 3A, Region 1 win on the road.

Mobile Christian is 3-7 and 3-4 in region play, after four forfeit losses. The win likely put the Leopards into the playoffs as the fourth seed from Region 1.

The winners piled up 337 yards of offense, 178 through the air as Landon Snow completed 5-of-7 for 115 yards and Miguel Camboia connected on 3-of-7 for 63. Snow had touchdown passes to Ben Brewer for 20 yards and Legarrius Sims for 31.

Mobile Christian’s Devin Harris had a pair of touchdown runs – 28 and 12 yards – and finished with 126 yards on 12 carries. Aaron Rogers had one carry for a 30-yard TD. Rogers also caught 3 passes for 77 yards to lead the Leopards.

Decorian Cowan had a 2-yard touchdown with 1:54 left in the first quarter to give Thomasville (6-3, 5-2) its only lead.

The Tigers had 148 yards of total offense, 114 on the ground led by Kameron Wright’s 80 yards on 11 attempts. Cowan ran 16 times for 49 yards.

Spanish Fort 45, Murphy 6

Sawyer Wilson ran for 126 yards and 2 TDs on 8 carries as Spanish Fort won the annual California Dreaming Bowl.

The Toros improved to 7-3 overall with their fifth straight win. They finished 6-2 in Region 1 play and will be the third seed in the playoffs.

Murphy fell to 2-6, 2-5.

Nemo Hixon finished with 67 yards and a TD on 7 carries for Spanish Fort. Brayden Walker was 11-of-18 passing for 95 yards and a TD. He also had a 2-yard TD run.

Caleb Breaux kicked a 37-yard field goal.

Spanish Fort is idle next week.

T.R. Miller 35, St. Michael 6

Myles Johnson rushed for 102 yards on 9 carries to lead Class 4A seventh-ranked T.R. Miller over St. Michael in Region 1 play.

The Tigers (8-1, 7-0) led 14-0 at the half when D.J. Fountain scored on a 5-yard run and freshman quarterback Eli Hubbert tossed a 12-yard touchdown to Broox Hart with 5:22 left in the half. Hart then passed to Brodie Anthony for the two-point conversion.

The second half was all Tigers.

Hart hit Johnson for a 24-yard touchdown on fourth down, Johnson scampered 74 yards for another TD and Christian Autrey ran 54 yards for a TD.

Takyi Askew also had two fumble recoveries for the Tigers.

Ezra Sexton scored on a 4-yard run for St. Michael (5-5, 4-3).

Sweet Water 30, St. Luke’s 14

Sweet Water scored two touchdowns in the final 7:09 to earn a third straight victory.

With the win, the Bulldogs (6-2 overall, 5-1 in Class 1A, Region 3) secured the No. 2 spot in the region standings behind Linden, which means the Bulldogs will host a first-round playoff game.

St. Luke’s tie dhte game at 14-all when Brandon Cooks completed a 24-yard TD pass to Percy Laduna. Brody Hale’s extra point tied the game at 14-all with 10:39 to play.

Sweet Water’s Delvontae Lucy scored on a 1-yard run with 7:09 to go, and Elliott Lucy ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-14 lead.

Lashone Young put the game away with a 24-yard touchdown run with 1:24 to go, and Jonathan Morris ran in the 2-point conversion

Morris also scored on a 3-yard run and led the Bulldogs with 99 yards on 17 carries. Elliott Lucy ha a 2-yard TD run.

For St. Luke’s, Cooks and Laduna hooked up for a 16-yard TD pass on the final play of the first half for a 7-6 halftime lead. Laduna caught six passes for 61 yards and two TDs.

Sweet Water is off until the playoffs, while St. Luke’s (4-5, 3-2) plays Cottage Hill Christian next week.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Arab 49, Hazel Green 21

Aidan Cox threw three touchdown passes and Drake Franklin ran for 167 yards and one first-half TD as host Arab defeated Hazel Green to match the program record for wins in a season.

Franklin was particularly effective in the first half, running for 124 of Arab’s 127 rushing yards. He scored on a 1-yard run with one minute left in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

He all but scored another first-half TD for Arab (9-1), rushing three times for 69 yards to the Hazel Green 1-yard line before Cox sneaked it in with 36.8 seconds left in the second quarter to make it 21-14 Arab. Franklin had back-to-back runs of 35 and 30 yards in the four-play, 70-yard drive.

Will Caneer had three sacks, two of which led directly to Arab touchdowns in the second half.

He sacked Hazel Green quarterback Griffin Fowler on third-and-21 at the Arab 35 midway through the third quarter, causing Fowler to fumble. Caleb Perkins recovered it and ran it back to the Hazel Green 40. Hayden O’Reilly ran it in from the 4 to cap a 10-play drive that included two fourth-down conversions. That score made it 35-14 Arab with 2:03 left in the third quarter.

Caneer sacked Fowler again on fourth-and-10 at the Arab 36 with 15 seconds left in the third quarter. Starting at the Arab 47 after the sack, Cox proceeded to hit a wide-open Spencer Strickland on a 41-yard catch-and-run to the Hazel Green 9. On the next play, Cox connected with Dakota NeSmith on a 9-yard TD pass as time expired in the third quarter.

Caneer finished with three tackles and two assists. Cox was 12-of-16 passing for 156 yards and three touchdowns. He also connected with Drew Puccio on a 19-yard TD pass in the second quarter and found Strickland again on a 17-yard scoring play 43 seconds into the second half. The latter TD was set up by Puccio’s 50-yard return of the second half kickoff.

O’Reilly, who ran for 23 yards, also scored on a 15-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, ending the scoring for the night.

Armond Caldwell had a big night for Hazel Green (4-5), rushing for 76 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries. He ran 4 yards for the first TD of the game and scored again in the second quarter on a 6-yard run that tied the game at 14 with 2:43 in the half.

It was mostly Arab the rest of the way except for Caldwell’s 3-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.

Strickland had four catches for 91 yards. Puccio had seven receptions for 56 yards.

Arab wrapped up the 5A, Region 7 title last week and learned tonight they’d be hosting East Limestone in the first round of the playoffs in two weeks. Hazel Green hosts Huntsville next week. The Trojans clinched third place in 6A, Region 8 last week and will play Muscle Shoals in the first round of the playoffs.

STATE

Oneonta 49, Good Hope 21

Fluff Bothwell ran wild at Good Hope to lead Oneonta to an 8-1 regular-season finish in the Class 4A, Region 6 win. Bothwell, a 6-foot, 211-pound junior, had 436 yards on the ground on 23 carries with 6 touchdowns – from 1, 52, 61, 63, 39 and 85 yards.

The Redskins trailed 7-0 and 14-7 before pulling away from a 14-all tie in the second period to lead 28-14 at the half. Oneonta scored 35 unanswered points on the Raiders.

Good Hope (5-5, 3-3) scored all its points on passes by Colten Whatley, the first two to K’Mal Bell and the final touchdown to Tyler Cone.

Oneonta also got a TD pass from Landon Abernathy to Teigan Hill.

Oneonta, Etowah and Cherokee County completed region play with 5-1 records and Good Hope finished fourth.

Montgomery Academy 40, Geneva 13

The Eagles wrapped up their regular season with a second straight road win to finish 5-5 overall and 4-3 in Class 4A, Region 2. Montgomery Academy is the No. 4 seed in the playoffs.

Parker Cook completed 8-of-10 passes for the winners for 244 yards with 3 touchdowns – two to DJ Vinson and one to Thomas Woodward. Vinson finished with 157 receiving yards and Woodward had 80.

Jashawn Cooper led the Eagles with 58 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Will Hardin had 7 tackles and Arch Lee had 6 and both had fumble recoveries for Montgomery Academy.

Geneva finishes the season at 4-6, 2-5.

Trinity 58, Greensboro 0

The Wildcats rolled to the home win and wrapped up second place in Class 3A, Region 3 with a balanced offensive attack. Trinity passed for 167 yards and ran for 166.

Walker McClinton hit 9-of-11 passes with 4 touchdowns – to DM Lieux, Norris Pemberton, John Morris and Camaree Jackson. Chase Parker ran for 77 yards on 6 carries with a score. JaMichael Jones ran 4 times for 51 yards and a TD. Matthew Schroll also scored in the rout.

Harrison Johnson, Ross Sanders and Schroll had 3 tackles apiece. Sanders had a sack and a tackle for a loss and Johnson had 1 tackle for a loss.

The Raiders finished 3-7 on the year and 1-5 in region play.

Trinity will host Saks in the first round of the playoffs.
