Friday roundup: Davidson, Gulf Shores, Catholic win big

Derrick “DJ” Butler ran for 254 yards and three touchdowns as Davidson defeated Fairhope 42-10 in Fairhope on Friday.

Butler, a Coastal Carolina commit, finished with 27 carries as the Warriors evened their record at 2-2 and improved to 1-2 in Class 7A, Region 1 play.

Davidson led 21-3 at the half with Anthony Rabb scoring on a 9-yard run and Butler scoring on runs of 35 and 2 yards. Fairhope (1-4, 0-2) got a 27-yard field goal from Campbell McKellar.

Rabb scored again on a 25-yard run to give the Warriors a 27-3 lead early in the second half. Fairhope responded as Jackson Robertson found Sanders Daniell from 9 yards away to get to within 27-10.

But Butler’s 52-yard touchdown made it 34-10, and Quinteris Wheeler added a touchdown with less than two minutes left in the game for the final score.

Butler finished with 284 offensive yards. He completed his only pass for the night, a 30-yarder to Anthony Rabb. Rabb finished with 19 carries for 78 yards.

Davidson coach Rick Cauley said he was proud of the offense after the Warriors put in a single-wing attack this week due to injuries at the quarterback position.

“O-line did a great job, proud of the kids,” he said.

He added that Butler became a single wing quarterback in three days.

Davidson travels to B.C. Rain for a non-region game next week. Fairhope travels to Foley on Oct. 5.

COASTAL ALABAMA

Gulf Shores 44, LeFlore 0

Gulf Shores had never started a season with five straight wins until now.

The Dolphins (5-0 overall, 4-0 in Class 5A, Region 1) earned a 44-0 victory over LeFlore in Mobile’s Toulminville neighborhood. Gulf Shores scored a shutout for the third time this season and second in a row, as Gulf Shores has outscored its opponents 164-36 this season.

LeFlore (1-4, 0-4) has now lost four straight games since a season-opening victory over Chickasaw. The Rattlers have scored only 19 points during the four-game losing skid.

Ronnie Royal and Kolin Wilson scored two touchdowns apiece – one rushing and one receiving. Kingston Lowe and Jud Harris scored rushing touchdowns, and Price Stephens also caught a TD pass.

Alex Rippy completed 6-of-8 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns, and Harris completed 5-of-8 passes for 83 yards.

Isaiah Hammac and Landon Everett led the Gulf Shores defense with seven tackles apiece. JaMichael Garrett had a sack, and Braden Jackson intercepted a pass.

Gulf Shores ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, plays at Murphy next week, while LeFlore now has two open weeks before playing at Vigor on Oct. 13.

BIRMINGHAM

Clay-Chalkville 39, Center Point 14

Class 6A No. 2-ranked Clay-Chalkville scored the first 32 points and eased to the Region 6 win, setting up next week’s nationally televised showdown with Class 7A top-ranked Thompson.

The Cougars (5-0, 3-0) led 16-0 after Alabama commit Jaylen Mbakwe’s touchdown with 7:31 to go in the first quarter and were never threatened by Center Point (3-2, 1-2).

Clay-Chalkville totaled 336 yards offense, including 260 on the ground, and held Center Point to 125 yards. The Cougars defense also recorded two safeties.

Homewood 41, Benjamin Russell 21

Junior quarterback Will Myers ran for a pair of touchdowns and passed for another as Homewood topped Benjamin Russell at Martin-Savarese Stadium in Alexander City.

The Patriots jumped to a 34-7 halftime lead and had 169 rushing yards before intermission.

Myers complete 11-of-12 passes for 123 yards and ran 11 times for 81 yards – 62 on nine attempts in the first half. Evan Ausmer ran 19 times for 79 yards with a touchdown and caught a 19-yard scoring pass. Altovise Crear ran 15 times for 48 yards and a TD for Homewood (2-3, 2-1 in Class 6A, Region 3).

The Patriots finished with 266 yards on the ground and had 22 first downs to 11 for Benjamin Russell.

Homewood plays at Pinson Valley next week. Benjamin Russell (2-2, 1-1) travels to Smiths Station.

Mountain Brook 49, Jackson-Olin 0

Class 6A seventh-ranked Mountain Brook scored 28 first quarter points on the way to the Region 5 win.

Mountain Brook got a 51-yard touchdown reception by Clark Sanderson and a 28-yard run by Cole Gamble, scoffing three touchdowns on six offense plays.

The Spartans (4-1, 3-0) have posted three straight shutouts and play at Class 7A Hoover next week.

Parker 41, Gardendale 22

Parker stayed undefeated as quarterback Malik Muhammad accounted for 300 yards total offense and two touchdowns in the win.

Muhammad finished 6-of-12 passing for 120 yards and a score and added 180 yards on 10 rushing attempts with a 1-yard scoring run for Class 6A fourth-ranked Parker (5-0, 3-0 in 6A, Region 5).

A’mari Brundidge ran 10 times for 120 yards with a rushing and receiving score. Martavius Purnell had eight carries for 80 yards and a score.

Na’eem Offord and Jourdin Crawford each ran for a touchdown, and Crawford led the defense with seven tackles and four sacks.

Mortimer Jordan 52, Woodlawn 6

The Colonels shocked home-standing Mortimer Jordan when Caleb Gatson took the opening kickoff 98 yards for a score, but the Blue Devils responded with 52 unanswered points to bounce back from a big loss last week at Parker.

Mortimer Jordan led 21-6 after one quarter and outscored the visitors 31-0 in the second period. The Blue Devils improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Class 6A, Region 6 play. Woodlawn dropped to 0-4, 0-2.

The winners held Woodlawn to 52 total yards while rolling up 378 – 324 on the ground. Junior running back Terence Gaines ran for 185 yards on 14 carries for Mortimer Jordan and scored three touchdowns. His TDs came on runs of 3, 3 and 45 yards.

Garrett Ames completed 4-of-9 passes for 42 yards and two TDs, 14 yards to Daunte Williams and 1 yard to Sean Taylor. Ames also scored on a 5-yard run. Micah Gatson scored on a 40-yard run and Ryder Gooch kicked a 37-yard field goal in the win.

Mortimer Jordan hosts Cullman next week. Woodlawn has an open date.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Sparkman 51, Grissom 0

Sparkman stayed unbeaten with a dominating 51-0 win over Class 7A, Region 4 rival Grissom.

Amari Jabbar returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown as the Senators never built a 37-0 lead at the half.

Jayden Thomas scored two touchdowns, and Jonathon Rozier, Jaden Scott and Brodie Slate scored a touchdown apiece. Jaylen Chambers had a 65-yard interception return for a touchown.. Jaden Scott finished the scoring for Sparkman getting a one yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Sparkman (5-0, 3-0) is off next week and plays at James Clemens on Oct. 6. Grissom (1-4, 0-3) will host Austin next week.

James Clemens 14, Florence 7

James Clemens earnd a road victory over Florence at Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence to stay tied with Sparkman atop the 7A, Region 4 standings.

The Jets trailed 7-0 at halftime, but tied it on Ty Doughty’s 28-yard pass to Devin Cooper with 5:55 to go in in the third quarter. The touchdown drive was set up by a an interception by Mark Woods near midfield.

Cam Berry put the Jets up 14-7 with 9:08 to go with a 28-yard touchdown run. Woods sealed the victory with his second interception.

James Clemens (4-1, 3-0) will host Muscle Shoals next week, and Florence (2-3, 2-1) will host Minor.

Madison Academy 62, Danville 13

Class 3A, No. 4-ranked Madison Academy stayed unbeaten by defeating Region 7 foe Danville 62-13.

Jake Poldiak threw four touchdown passes, and Jaiden Etienne caught three for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Jackson Reece also caught three passes for 89 yards and one touchdown.

Ken Cherry scored two rushing touchdowns. Maurice Scott had 65-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Madison Academy (4-0, 2-0) plays Madison County next week, and Danville (0-5, 0-3) will be off next week before playing at Shoals Christian on Oct. 6.

Athens 55, Mae Jemison 35

Athens earned a 6A, Region 7 victory by beating Mae Jemison 55-35, thanks to a big night from John McIntrye.

McIntyre accounted for 199 yards and six touchdowns. He had 120 yards and five TDs on the ground and added eight catches for 69 yards and another score. Jay’shon Ridgle had five catches for 99 yards and one touchdown.

The Golden Eagles led 28-14 at halftime and outscored the Jaguars 27-21 in the second half.

Quarterback Brogan Gross finished 17-of-24 passing for 261 yards and two touchdowns, and John

Athens (4-1, 2-1) is off next week and resumes play at Cullman on Oct. 6. Mae Jemison (2-3, 1-1) will host Huntsville next week.

Cullman 40, Lee-Huntsville 7

Cullman led 30-0 at the half, thanks touchdowns from OJ Turner, Sam Mayhayr, Cooper Ogstad and Wyatt Buchannon.

Lee running back Carlin Long had 98 yards on 20 carries, and and Lashaun Vann had 93 yards on only five carries.

Cullman (3-2, 1-1) will be at Mortimer Jordan next week. Lee (3-3, 1-1) will host Fort Payne.

Guntersville 35, Boaz 14

Guntersville used a quick-strike offense to build an early lead and stayed undefeated with a 35-14 victory over rival Boaz.

The Wildcats (4-0 overall, 2-0 in Class 5A, Region 7) needed only 1:31 to score on their first possession and 43 seconds on the second drive to lead 14-0 after one quarter.

The first touchdown came on a 29-yard pass from Eli Morrison to Date Peterson. The second score came on an 18-yard pass from Morrisson to Cam Logan. Diego Luna kicked the extra points.

Boaz (2-3, 0-2) cut the lead to 14-7 with its first touchdown with 7:19 to go in the second quarter, as Tristan Childers scored on a 7-yard run to cap a 14-play, 65-yard drive. Jose Arreguin kicked the PAT.

Guntersville extended the lead to 21-7 with a five-play, 58-yard drive late in the half. Enelson Delva scored on a 4-yard run. Luna kicked the PAT with 3:07 remaining in the first half.

The Wildcats extended the lead to 28-7 late in the third quarter on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Morrison to Logan.

Boaz answered with a 10-play, 68-yard drive, and Tyler Pierce threw a 26-yard touchdown to Landon Alexander with 10:51 to go. Arreguin’s PAT cut the lead to 28-14.

After a failed Boaz onside Guntersville put the game away with a scoring drive that last more than six minutes. Delva scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 4:48 remaining.

Did you know?: Guntersville has now beaten Boaz five straight times and 10 of the last 11 in the series.

Stat sheet: Delva finished with 99 yards rushing on 25 carries. Morrison completed 11-of-13 passes for 198 yards. … Childers led Boaz with 84 yards on 28 attempts.

What’s next?: Guntersville hosts Buckhorn next week, while Boaz travels to Southside.

Scottsboro 28, Arab 14

Scottsboro shut out Arab after falling behind 14-0 to stay unbeaten this season.

Quarterback Jake Jones threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Wright in the third quarter to break a 14-all tie, and Jayden Gilbert added a 23-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Brandon Edmondson ran for 154 yards for Scottsbor (4-0 overall, 2-0 in 5A, Region 7), and Wright scored two rushing TDs.

Arab’s Wyatt Lamar returned a fumble 91 yards for a touchdown, and Logan Silva scored on a 3-yard run.

Logan Alldredge led Arab (4-1, 2-1) with 71 yards rushing, and Luke Hudson caught seven passes for 96 yards. Hagan Stewart added 11 tackles and two pass break-ups.

Arab plays at Fort Payne next week, while Scottsboro is at Priceville.

STATEWIDE

Montgomery Catholic 49, Geneva 0

Montgomery Catholic earned its third shutout of the season and stayed undefeated with a 49-0 road victory over Geneva at Hugh Owen Stadium.

The victory pushes Montgomery Catholic’s regular-season winning streak to 29 games and 28 straight in region games. The Knights have also won 19 straight road games.

Josh Griffin ran 10 times for 107 yards and five touchdowns, and quarterback Caleb McCreary completed 10-of-9 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns for the Knights (5-0 overall, 3-0 in Class 4A, Region 2). Courtney Williams caught four passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Joe Pierce paced the Knights’ defense with eight tackles and forced a fumble, and Harrison Rodgers added six tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery. Rickie Williams had seven tackles and broke up a pass.

The Knights, ranked No. 3 in 4A, play at Demopolis next week, while Geneva (1-4, 1-2) plays at Geneva County.

Pike Road 48, Eufaula 30

Pike Road earned a third straight victory, as junior Jordan King excelled on offense and defense and sophomore Ja’Michael Jones scored two rushing touchdowns.

The loss ended Eufaula’s three-game winning streak.

King scored had two carries for 80 yards and scored touchdowns on both runs and added three catches for 44 yards. On defense, he returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown and added five tackles and two pass break-ups.

Jones logged 19 carries for 160 yards and two TDs, and Adrian Thornton added a 21-yard TD run.

Jordan Holmes added an interception, fumble recovery and five tackles for the Pike Road defense, and Auburn commit Malik Blocton had seven tackles and scored a defensive touchdown. Braylon Outlaw had eight tackles.

Pike Road (3-2 overall, 2-0 in Class 6A Region 2) is idle next week returns to region play on Oct. 6 at Park Crossing. Eufaula (3-2 overall, 2-0 in Class 5A, Region 2) plays at home against Pell City next week.
