Friday roundup: Central-Phenix City stays perfect

Central-Phenix City (9-0) completed an undefeated regular season for the eighth time in school history, as Andrew Alford threw three touchdowns to give him 32 this season in Friday’s 48-7 victory over Prattville.

It’s the fourth undefeated regular season in the last seven seasons for Central, following a 9-0 finish in 2017 and 10-0 regular seasons in 2018 and 2021. Central, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 7A, has won 13 straight regular-season games.

Alford finished 6-of-9 passing for 266 yards, with TD passes of 76 yards to Daylyn Upshaw, 55 yards to Tristan Williams and 46 yards to Dylan Gentry. Texas A&M commit Cam Coleman had two catches for 64 yards.

Zack Simmons-Brown ran eight times for 68 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 10 yards, and Williams scored on a 61-yard run. Freshman Bobby Coleman threw a 26-yard TD toss to Jayveon Patterson.

Central finished with 435 total yards, 132 rushing and 303 passing. Prattville had 182 yards of total offense.

Central advances to the Class 7A playoffs next week and plays at home against Davidson. Prattville (3-7) did not advance to the playoffs for the second straight year and ended the season on a two-game losing skid.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Fairhope 24, Briarwood Christian 14

Fairhope shut out Briarwood Christian in the second half and earned a 24-14 victory at W.C. Majors Field.

Fairhope’s Campbell McKellard started the scoring with a 34-yard field goal, and Briarwood’s Cooper Higgins answered with a 5-yard TD run to make it 7-3. Fairhope’s Preston Godfrey returned the ensuiting kickoff 98 yards to make it 10-7.

Kenneth Reynolds, who also picked off Fairhope quarterback Jackson Robertson in the second quarter, scored a 40-yard touchdown run with 1:16 to go in the half to put the Lions up 14-10.

After getting outgained 160-133, 29 plays to 16, and losing the turnover battle, Fairhope responded on their first second-half drive as Robertson went 6-for-7 for 63 yards. Robertson finished the drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Fisher Southall for a 17-14 lead.

Later, the Lions muffed a punt, and Fairhope’s Patrick Harbin recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown and a 24-14 lead.

Robertson finished 18-of-24 passing for 127 yards and an interception.

Briarwood QB Joshua Thompson went 10-of-15 passing for 107 yards and Kenneth Reynolds finished with 19 carries for 82 yards, with 81 of in the first half.

Briarwood (5-5) advances to the Class 6A playoffs and plays at Carver-Montgomery next week. Fairhope (3-7) missing the playoffs and finished with a losing record for the first time since 2016.

Baldwin County 43, Robertsdale 13

Baldwin County’s Ti Mims made the most his eight touches on Friday against Robertsdale at Simmons Field in Bay Minette.

Mims finished with six catches for 108 ayrds and a touchdown, scored on a 10-yard run on his only carry and returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to lead Baldwin County.

Robertsdale (0-10), which dismissed coach Kyle Stanford during the regular season, has lost 24 straight games. Baldwin County (2-8) snapped a five-game losing skid.

Preston King completed 10-of-12 passes for 190 yards and a TD for the Tigers, while Demorian Andrews scored on a 15-yard run and Jamarion Marshall added a 5-yard TD run. Hayden Coley also threw a 12-yard TD pass to LeJames Daniels.

Daphne 50, Hillcrest-Evergreen 18

Jamar Malone passed for four touchdowns and Nick Clark had two rushing TDs and a receiving score as Daphne (6-4) closed the regular season with a victory.

The Trojans won three of their final four games and will play on the road in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs next week.

John Davis, C.J. Gardener and Jaecyn Myles each had receiving TDs. Myles also had a kickoff return for a score. Mikel Willoughby had a receiving touchdown as well.

Hillcrest finished 3-7.

Bayside Academy 35, Alabama Christian 7

Damien Tate rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns as Bayside Academy tuned up for the Class 4A playoffs with a road win.

The Admirals improved to 8-2 overall in former Auburn QB Barrett Trotter’s first year as head coach. They’ve won four straight games.

QB Sammy Dunn was 7-of-11 for 82 yards and a TD. Teague Broadhead rushed for 66 yards and a TD on seven carries. He also had an interception. Burk Brown had an interception as well.

Sophomore Noah Cain had six tackles, two pass breakups and a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Alabama Christian (6-4) will play at Houston Academy in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs. Bayside’s opponent will be announced later tonight.

Citronelle 35, Elberta 24

Justin Adams rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries as Citronelle finished Jason Barnett’s first season as head coach with a win.

The Wildcats finished 6-4 overall and 4-4 in 5A, Region 1 play.

Keyshawn Williams rushed for 65 yards and a TD on seven carries. Adams was 3-of-9 passing for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Landen Snow was 2-of-2 for 70 yards and a TD.

Elberta finished 2-8.

Faith Academy 21, LeFlore 6

Ty Goodwill rushed for two touchdowns, caught six passes for 55 yards and had 10 tackles as Faith Academy finished the regular season with a win.

The Rams (7-3, 6-2) will be the No. 2 seed from 5A, Region 1 and host Elmore County. LeFlore finished 1-9.

EJ King rushed for 136 yards on 12 carries. Jacori Stabler had a rushing TD and blocked a punt.

Carson Ratliff led the defense with eight tackles, three tackles for a loss and three sacks.

HUNTSVILLE

Scottsboro 35, Decatur 20

Scottsboro finished its regular season with a 35-20 win over Decatur, securing the No. 2 seed in 5A, Region 7.

The Wildcats’ running game led the way as they got 91 yards and two touchdowns from Jackobi Edmonson, 89 yards fand a touchdown from Keelan Alvarez and 99 yards from Jake Jones.

Scottsboro got off to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 64-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Jayden Gilbert followed by a two-yard run from Alvarez. Antonio Brooks’ two-yard touchdown pushed the Scottsboro lead to 21-0 with 9:09 left in the half.

Decatur got on the board with Bradin Dupper’s seven-yard pass to Wyatt Smith, cutting the lead to 21-7. But Scottsboro quickly responded with a seven-yard touchdown from Edmonson to push the lead to 27-7. Decatur was able to slice into the Wildcat lead before the half, getting a 22-yard touchdown pass from Dupper to Rhys Dorsey to bring the score to 27-14 at the half.

Scottsboro controlled the game on the second half, getting a 40-yard touchdown from Edmonson early in the fourth quarter to go up 35-14. Dupper was able to get Decatur a little closer with a four-yard touchdown run as time expired.

Scottsboro will host Moody in the first round of the playoffs next week.

Athens 41, Russellville 14

Athens quarterback Brogan Gross threw two touchdown passes, ran for another and threw for a 2-point conversion to help the Knights earn a home win.

Class 6A Athens improved to 8-2 on the year and will open the state playoffs at Oxford next week.

John McIntyre ran for a pair of touchdowns for the winners and caught the 2-pointer from Gross. Silas Jones also had a rushing TD.

“Offensively, we were very uncharacteristic,” Athens head coach Cody Gross said. “We had one turnover going into last week. We turned it over twice the first half last week. Turned it over three times the first half this week. So, we’ve got to quit turning the ball over.

“I was proud of how we were able to pound it. Get in there and get downhill. Defensively, we played great. If we don’t fumble before the half we hold them to seven. I’m really proud of our defense.”

Harrison Burch threw a touchdown pass to Michael Scofield for 5A Russellville (8-2). Cameron Phinizee had a rushing score.

“This is a big game for us,” said Athens senior Johnson Speegle, who caught a touchdown pass. “This is a big rival. It’s a great win like that and it is going to help us tremendously in the playoffs.”

Russellville will host Fairfield in the first round of the playoffs.

Boaz 48, Lee-Huntsville 14

The Boaz defense held Lee-Huntsville to 24 yards in the opening half on the way to a 27-2 lead at intermission and closed out the regular season at 5-5 with the home win at Dr. L.F. Corley Jr. Stadium.

The Pirates will face Southside-Gadsden in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs next week, a rematch of a Sept. 29 game won by Southside 48-45 in overtime.

Against Lee (5-5), quarterback Tyler Pierce accounted for four touchdowns – two passing scores and two on the ground. Pierce completed 8-of-11 passes for 108 yards. Pierce’s rushing touchdowns came on runs of 6 and 2 yards.

Pierce has scoring passes of 24 yards to Bo Brock and 5 yards to JaKai Hudgins.

Boaz junior Tristan Childers ran for 145 yards on 22 carries and a TD. Presley Fant had a 23-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The Pirates scored on a 20-yard interception return by Jacob Gareri and Lee’s defense got a safety with 47 seconds left in the opening period.

QB Patrick Bailey drove the Generals 80 yards in three plays, including a 58-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Johnson for Lee’s first TD of the night. Johnson also scored on a 1-yard run.

Guntersville 57, Albertville 16

Guntersville rolled to a 50-0 halftime lead and cruised past Albertville on the road in the teams’ 109th meeting. The 10th-ranked Wildcats improved to 8-1 on the season and will host Springville in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Enelson Delva led Guntersville with 130 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns. Julyon Jordon added 87 yards and a TD. Camp Green and Avery Clifton also had two scores apiece in the rout.

Date Peterson led the defense, finishing with an interception return for a TD.

Albertville closes out the season at 0-10.

STATEWIDE

T.R. Miller 36, W.S. Neal 8

T.R. Miller’s Takyi Askew ran 21 times for 146 yards and touchdowns, as the Tigers defeated W.S. Neal in the Battle of Murder Creek for the sixth straight season.

Askew had touchdown runs of 3, 5, 10, and 1 yard at Buddy Taylor Field in East Brewton. TRM quarterback Nathan Commander finished 5-of-9 passing for 59 yards and a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marshall Lovelace.

W.S. Neal’s Jabrei Machey scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter.

T.R. Miller (7-3) will host Anniston next week in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs, while W.S. Neal (7-3) travels to Randolph County in the 3A playoffs.

Brantley 55, Florala 46

Brantley quarterback Jayden Parks accounted for seven touchdowns as the Bulldogs head to the playoffs on a three-game winning streak.

Parks finished 15-of-20 passing for 230 yards and four touchdowns – all to Cooper Layton – and added 12 rushes for 195 yards and three touchdowns. Layton had 10 catches for 195 yards.

Florala (7-3) and Brantley (6-4) advance to next week’s Class 1A playoffs.
