Scottsboro 56, Priceville 21

Brandon Edmonson Jr. rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns to help undefeated Class 5A Scottsboro rout 4A Priceville 56-21 on Friday.

Scottsboro coach Cris Bell said the win avenged a 28-21 home loss to the Bulldogs last season.

“These guys jumped up and stole one from us last year,” Bell said. “They earned it. They flat-out stole it from us. We had a little payback I guess (this year).”

Scottsboro (5-0) also got a touchdown apiece from Jayden Gilbert, Antonio Brocks and Noah Tolleson. Jake Jones threw a touchdown pass to Thomas Stewart. Kyle Wright returned a punt blocked by Andrew Smith for a score.

Blitz Clemons had 128 yards on the ground and rushed for all three Priceville scores. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak after the Bulldogs dropped their first two contests.

“Early on I thought we did a good job moving the ball,” Priceville coach Chris Foster said. “We had a couple of mistakes that we made blocking wise that put us behind the sticks (with) field position situations. Then we didn’t do a great job fixing (things) off of that.”

Priceville (3-3) will travel to play Region 8 rival St. John Paul II on Friday.

Scottsboro will play at Region 7 co-leader Guntersville.

“We’ve got some guys that are dinged up,” Bell said. “We need them healthy. It’s just going to take really a superhuman effort next week on our part. They’re maybe the most talented team in our region.”

Class 5A sixth-ranked Leeds celebrated homecoming with a dominating victory over winless Class 4A Sylacauga.

Leeds (4-1) scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and led 34-0 at halftime. Some of that was due to short fields provided by the Aggies (0-6) — the Green Wave started four of its five first-half scoring drives in Aggie territory, either after a special teams miscue or a failed fourth-down conversion.

Leeds head coach Jerry Hood said his message was simply, “Come out mentally prepared, execute at a high level. That’s all we wanted to come out and do.”

Junior quarterback Conner Nelson accounted for three first-half touchdowns and finished with 95 all-purpose yards. Tailback ZJ Dale ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns, the final one on a 63-yard third-quarter dash.

The Green Wave defense did not allow Sylacauga to cross its own 40-yard line until late in the third quarter. At halftime, the Aggies had netted minus-2 yards.

“We knew they would come and be physical,” Leeds defensive end Chris Burge said. “We had to keep them contained.”

The Aggies got second-half TDs from Jamaury Thomas and Ashton Machen. The two combined for 103 yards rushing, most of it after halftime.

“Nothing about it that was fun,” Sylacauga head coach Chris Smelley said. “You got a choice to quit in that situation or continue to compete, and that’s the choice our guys just decided to make.”

Both teams return to region play next week. Sylacauga will return home to face Beauregard, while Leeds travels to Gadsden to face Southside.
