Friday Baseball Roundup: Gordo, Sardis sweep semifinal series
Top-ranked Gordo swept No. 2 Phil Campbell 10-4 and 11-1 on Friday to move into the Class 3A finals next week.
The Green Wave will play Houston Academy next week for the title.
In Game 1, Gordo pounded out 15 hits and took control of the game with a six-run third inning. Baylee Price homered and drove in three runs. Landon Fike and Brady Jones drove in two each. Will Whitley went the distance on the mound, allowing four hits and two earned runs.
Starter Cole Pace took the loss for Phil Campbell. Kyle Pace went 2-for-4 with a homer and all four of his team’s RBIs.
In the nightcap, Gordo scored in every inning except the first, ending the game in five innings. Caleb Jennings had three RBIs. Brax Garrison added two. Baines pitched all five innings to get the win. He allowed just three hits and struck out six.
Eli Taylor took the loss for Phil Campbell.
CLASS 5A
Holtville 7, Demopolis 4
Holtville scored five runs in the first inning in Game 1 and tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth after Demopolis closed to 5-4.
Game 2 was postponed until Saturday. A third game would follow if necessary.
Lane Talley drove in two runs. Drew Conner was 3-for-3 for the Bulldogs. Tanner Potts added two hits. Potts went the distance on the mound, scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs. Josh Holley homered and had a pair of RBIs for Demopolis. Jake Bumgarner took the loss.
Sardis 4-7, Boaz 2-5
No. 3 Sardis swept past rival Boaz to reach the Class 5A finals.
In Game 1, Sardis scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. Carson Gillian had two RBIs. Luke Weems was 2-for-3. Weems also went the distance on the mound, allowing seven hits and two runs. He struck out seven and walked two. Davis Kirkpatrick was 2-for-3 for Boaz. Starter Branson Honea took the loss for the Pirates.
In the nightcap, the Lions scored five runs in the top of the first and added two more in the sixth. Gillian was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Russ Wiggs was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Trey Thornton had two hits. Blaze Gerhart started and got the win, allowing five runs in 6.1 innings. He struck out 10.
Noah Long had two hits for Boaz. Cade Whorton drove in three runs.
