Friday Baseball Roundup: Baldwin County, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa split
Landen Walker pitched a complete-game, no-hitter Friday night as Baldwin County salvaged a doubleheader split with Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in the Class 6A quarterfinals.
The Tigers won the nightcap 11-0 after losing the opener 3-1. The two teams will meet in Game 3 at 1 p.m. today to decide who reaches the state semifinals.
Walker struck out 11 in seven innings in Game 2. He didn’t walk a batter. Hillcrest had two runners reach base on Baldwin County errors in the second inning and two others hit-by-a-pitch.
The Tigers (28-10) pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of five Hillcrest errors. Braydon Bryars led the offense, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Aiden Owens also drove in two runs.
Hillcrest scored two runs in the top of the first inning of the opener and never trailed. Jackson Henderson homered for the Patriots. Evan Williams, Noah Latham and Brooks Tunnell each had two hits.
Williams got the win on the mound. He allowed nine hits but just one run. Henderson got the final out for the save. Jaxen Schuler went the distance and took the loss for the Tigers. He gave up eight hits and all three runs.
Walker had two hits each for Baldwin County.
CLASS 7A
Central-Phenix City 5-12, Baker 0-2
No. 4 Central-Phenix City (37-3) advanced to the semifinals with a sweep of No. 6 Baker (29-8) at home on Friday night.
In Game 1, Cam Norton pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four hits and no runs for the Red Devils.
Hunter Wippert was 2-for-2 to lead the offense. Emory Yohn scored a pair of runs.
Baker’s Camden Payne gave up four runs – only two earned – in two innings to take the loss. Ethan Santos led the Hornets with three of their five hits.
The Red Devils opened the second game with a four-run first inning and added three more runs in the third and five in the sixth of a five-inning game. They took advantage of three Baker errors.
Sam Brown went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored for Central. Brody Stamp, Chris Kelly and Briggs Cameron also drove in two runs each. That production backed Wippert, who started and got the win. Stamp pitched the final 1.2.
Bryson Sudduth, the first of three Baker pitchers, took the loss. Micah Cornelius had two hits for the Hornets.
CLASS 6A
Spanish Fort 10-8, Wetumpka 3-5
No. 7 Spanish Fort broke a 5-5 tie in the nightcap with three runs on the top of the seventh inning to finish a sweep of Wetumpka.
The Toros (28-10) will play either Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa or Baldwin County in the state semifinals next week. Those two teams split their doubleheader Friday. Spanish Fort is trying to return to the state finals for the second straight season.
Wetumpka finished 24-16.
Lakelon Ray’s RBI double in the seventh gave Spanish Fort the lead for good. Brayden Cooper added a two-run double later in the inning. Ray was 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored. Andrew Salmon drove in two runs. Noah Golson had two hits for the Indians.
In the opener, Spanish Fort scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to break open a close game.
Jack Holley was 3-for-4 with a homer. Ray was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Cooper was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Newton Gardner had two hits and an RBI.
Ethan Kick got the complete game win, giving up four hits and three runs. He struck out eight. Golson took the loss for the Indians. Logan Fawcett homered and drove in two.
CLASS 4A
Bibb County 6, Trinity 3
Top-ranked Bibb County gave up 3 first inning runs then roared back for the Game 3 win over ninth-ranked Trinity in Friday quarterfinal action.
The Choctaws (32-4) play No.10 American Christian (24-16) in next week’s semifinal round.
After Trinity (26-13) scored 3 runs to open the game – an RBI single by Philip Mitchell, a bases-loaded walk and passed ball – Bibb County tied it on a 3-run double by Dawson Shoults in its half of the inning.
A third inning sacrifice fly by Ethan McMillan gave the Choctaws a lead they wouldn’t lose. Bodie Giddiens followed with a 2-run double and Giddiens’ run-scoring single in the fourth ended the scoring.
Shoults shut out the Wildcats after giving up the first inning runs, allowing only 2 more hits, 4 total in the game.
Giddiens was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run while Matthew Cash was 2-for 4 with a double and 2 runs.
Corner 9-14, Deshler 0-4
Third-ranked Corner pounded 28 hits with 11 extra-base hits in the Thursday sweep of eighth-ranked Deshler.
The win earns Corner a semifinal playoff spot next week against the winner of North Jackson vs. Westminster Christian.
The Yellow Jackets (29-6) belted 4 home runs – Eli Cannon, Brendan Conner, Cole Rasbury and Carson Hurley – and 7 doubles.
The offensive explosion started early, Conner blasting a 3-run homer in the first inning of Game 1.
Cannon was 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs and 2 runs while Conner was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and a run and Sam Hill was 2-for-3.
If the potent offense wasn’t enough, starting pitcher Brodie Dunlap tossed a 2-hit, complete-game shutout.
Game 2 was tied 4-all in the fourth before Corner scored 10 runs over the final three innings to complete the sweep.
Jace Boyd provided the big bat with 5 hits and 7 RBIs. Boyd had a 3-run double and two 2-run singles in addition to scoring a run.
Cannon was 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs and Hurley was 3-for-4 with an RBI and 4 runs.
Cannon got the win, throwing 5 innings with 7 strikeouts, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs.
CLASS 2A
Bayshore Christian 6, Pike Liberal Arts 3
Brooks Jones drove in three runs and Braden Preus pitched seven strong innings as Bayshore Christian eliminated No. 3-ranked Pike Liberal Arts in Game 3 of their series.
The Eagles (18-13) advance to take on No. 4 Ariton in the state semifinals next week. PLA finished 28-7.
Preus scattered six hits and allowed three runs – all unearned. He struck out four and walked four.
Jones was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Jace Jones and Jack Malone also had two hits each. Malone and Cory Parker had RBIs.
Bayshore took the lead for good at 4-3 with two runs in the top of the third and added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fifth.
Cole Garrott had two hits for the Patriots.
Vincent 5-4, Mars Hill Bible 4-6
Eighth-ranked Mars Hill Bible built a 4-run lead then held on for the Game 2 win to stave off elimination against top-ranked Vincent.
Game 3 will be Saturday at noon.
A Sacrifice fly by Jaxon Poag and Aidan Kennedy’s run-scoring double in the bottom of the sixth proved the difference in the second game.
Brooks Campbell pitched the win, throwing 3 1/3 innings with 4 strikeouts and allowing 2 runs with 2 hits.
Vincent’s Camden Cobb was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs while Landon Archer had a hit and RBI and Ray Albright had an RBI. Casen Fields had a hit and scored 2 runs.
Vincent (29-5) got a game-winning run-scoring double from Archer for the Game 1 victory. Archer led the attack with 2 hits and 3 RBIs.
Starting pitcher Aiden Poe struck out 9 and also had a hit and RBI at the plate.
The Panthers (24-10) tied the score 4-all in the top of the seventh on a single by Poag, who was 2-for-4. Campbell was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs while Cam Isbell and Jack Irby each doubled.
