Freshmen Ryan Williams, Jaylen Mbakwe launching Alabama football podcast
During Nick Saban’s time with Alabama football, the Crimson Tide didn’t allow true freshmen to speak with reporters.
Now, freshmen can not only speak with reporters but two notable freshmen are also launching a podcast.
Wide receiver Ryan Williams and cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe will host the show called “New Wave,” according to a release from the show provided to AL.com. The show is expected to have episodes every other week. In addition to talking about their time playing for the Crimson Tide on and off the field, Williams and Mbakwe are also expected to have guests join, including program alumni who played in the NFL when they come through town.
Williams and Mbakwe were both five-star recruits in the 2024 recruiting class. Just this past weekend against Western Kentucky, Williams caught two passes for 139 yards and for two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Mbakwe tallied four tackles and broke up one pass. Both are in-state talent with Williams having played for Saraland and Mbakwe competing for Clay-Chalkville.
Alabama football will be producing the podcast, so it will be entirely in house. Walt Brock and Preston Adelman will lead the efforts; They’re director and associate director of creative for football.
It’s an example of a new age not only for the Crimson Tide with freshmen talking but players also having a chance to help build their brands with university resources and infrastructure. Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer hired Brock and Adelman to spearhead those efforts as football players look to capitalize on true name, image and likeness opportunities.
The first episode of “New Wave” is expected to be released Monday.
