Freeze warnings tonight for much of Alabama

Tonight could be even colder than last night across Alabama, according to forecasters.

Freeze warnings are set to go into effect later tonight for a large part of the state. A wide swath of Alabama could have to deal with low temperatures at the freezing mark (32 degrees) or even lower by Wednesday morning.

Temperatures could dip as low as 24 degrees in north Alabama, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service.

Central Alabama lows will range from 28 degrees in the north to around 32 in the southern part of the region.

South Alabama temperatures are expected to fall to between the mid-30s to around 40 degrees.

Here is a look at the freeze warnings for Alabama for tonight:

NORTH ALABAMA

* Freeze warning for all of north Alabama from 11 p.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday.

* Freeze watch from late Wednesday night to Thursday morning for Jackson and DeKalb counties in northeast Alabama.

CENTRAL ALABAMA

* Freeze warning for all of central Alabama from midnight until 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The counties in the warning are Etowah, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, St. Clair, Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Marion, Lamar, Fayette, Winston, Walker, Blount, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, Shelby, Sumter, Greene, Hale, Perry, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Chambers, Marengo, Dallas, Autauga, Lowndes, Elmore, Montgomery, Macon, Bullock, Lee, Russell, Pike and Barbour.

* Freeze watch from late Wednesday night through Thursday morning for Etowah, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, St. Clair, Talladega, Clay and Randolph counties.

SOUTH ALABAMA

* Freeze warning from midnight tonight until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Covington, Choctaw, Clarke, Wilcox, Monroe, Conecuh, Butler and Crenshaw counties.

* Frost advisory from 2 a.m. until 8 a.m. Wednesday for Geneva and Houston counties.

Slightly warmer temperatures are in the forecast for Wednesday night into Thursday morning for much of Alabama except the northeast corner, which still could see readings near freezing.

Thursday should feature warmer weather, but more cooler temperatures are expected over the weekend following the passage of another cold front.
