Freeze warnings for Alabama: How cold will it get?

The coldest night of the week is in store for Alabama tonight, and freeze warnings have been issued for the southern part of the state.

It was also chilly across Alabama on Tuesday morning, but even colder temperatures are expected tonight into Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Lows tonight could fall as low as the low 20s in north Alabama, the mid- to upper 20s in central Alabama and the upper 20s to low 30s in south Alabama, according to forecasters.

Some areas in Alabama fell below freezing last night. Here are some unofficial low temperatures from around Alabama from last night:

* Alexander City: 35 degrees

* Anniston: 30 degrees

* Auburn: 37 degrees

* Birmingham: 33 degrees

* Decatur: 26 degrees

* Demopolis: 36 degrees

* Dothan: 42 degrees

* Evergreen: 39 degrees

* Gadsden: 25 degrees

* Greenville: 36 degrees

* Haleyville: 26 degrees

* Huntsville: 27 degrees

* Mobile: 41 degrees

* Montgomery: 38 degrees

* Muscle Shoals: 27 degrees

* Talladega: 29 degrees

* Troy: 41 degrees

* Tuscaloosa: 32 degrees

The weather service has issued freeze warnings for the southern third of the state that will go into effect tonight.

Why no freeze warnings for northern Alabama? It will be even colder across the rest of the state, but the growing season has been declared over in those areas and no freeze warnings will be issued again until growing resumes in the spring.

Here are the freeze warnings for tonight in Alabama:

SOUTHWEST ALABAMA

* Freeze warning from midnight until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Choctaw, Washington, Clarke, Wilcox, Monroe, Conecuh, Butler, Crenshaw, Escambia, Covington and inland and central Mobile and Baldwin counties.

The National Weather Service in Mobile said temperatures as low as 28 are expected in those areas overnight.

SOUTHEAST ALABAMA

* Freeze warning from midnight until 7 a.m. CST Wednesday for Coffee, Dale, Geneva, Henry and Houston counties.

The weather service in Tallahassee, Fla., said temperatures as low as 27 are expected.

It will still be on the cooler side after Wednesday, but the weather service expects temperatures to be a few degrees warmer. Rain is also expected to return on Thursday night.
