Frazier leads St. Paul’s past McGill-Toolen, 14-6

Last week the St. Paul’s Saints won the Battle of Old Shell Road against UMS-Wright.

Friday night, they completed the sweep of their neighboring rivals by holding off McGill-Toolen for a 14-6 win.

St. Paul’s coach Ham Barnett said one game might have had an impact on the other.

“Last week was like winning the national championship for us. This was a tough week coming off that win,” Barnett said. “This was about the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen, but I was proud we found a way to win.”

After winning 14-7 last week, the Saints (2-0) prevailed by almost the same score again. Both touchdowns Friday night were provided by Anthony Frazier, but in very different ways.

Early in the second quarter, the sophomore scored on a 14-yard run to put the Saints on top 7-3. His second score came when he blocked a punt, then scooped the ball up at the goal line on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The only points for McGill-Toolen (0-2) came on Henry Green field goals of 45 yards in the first quarter and 38 yards in the second quarter.

— Play of the Game: The Yellow Jackets trailed 7-6 and had the ball on their own 48 late in the third quarter. But a sack by freshman William Abrams and senior Oliver Cross forced a punt from the 40. The snap sailed over the punter’s head. By the time the ball could be retrieved, Frazier was there to block the punt and scoop up the ball at the goal line for the touchdown.

–By The Numbers: McGill-Toolen actually had more total yards in the game. The Yellow Jackets ran the ball 32 times for 121 yards. Quarterback Andrew Murchison completed 19 of 34 passes for 128 yards, for a total of 249 yards. St. Paul’s ran 36 times for 123 yards, while passing for 75 yards, a total of 198 yards.

— Game ball: Frazier was the player of the game, rushing 27 times for 97 yards and scoring the game’s only two touchdowns.

— Coachspeak: “It was the same story as last week with mistakes, the effort was good again,” said first-year McGill-Toolen coach David Faulkner. “We got better tonight. I believe we’ll put it all together before the year is over.”

— They Said It: “Winning against UMS and McGill means a lot to our team and out community,” said senior offensive tackle Asher Hale, a South Alabama commit. “We’ve got a great chance to test ourselves next week.”

Next week: St. Paul’s will face the state’s No. 1 team and the defending Class 6A state championships Saraland Spartans at Saraland. McGill-Toolen will take a week off before traveling to Robertsdale Sept. 15.
