Almost seven months after the San Francisco 49ers selected cornerback Darrell Luter in the fifth round of the NFL Draft, the former South Alabama standout will be eligible to make his NFL debut on Sunday.

Also eligible to play on Sunday after Saturday transactions are former Alabama running back Derrick Gore with the Washington Commanders and former Spain Park High School quarterback Nick Mullens with the Minnesota Vikings.

On Saturday, San Francisco activated Luter from reserve/physically unable to perform. The defensive back had spent the season on the PUP list, although he returned to practice last week.

The 49ers never announced the nature of Luter’s injury, but reports indicate the cornerback had a knee issue.

“For sure, it’s been a roller coaster,” Luter told the San Jose Mercury-News, “but being able to be in this position and come to this facility every day and just work, regardless of the situation, has been a blessing. When you’re out and hurt, you get to observe a lot of things you don’t see when you’re out on the field doing things physically with your body. Mentally, the game has come a lot easier for me. It’s helped me understand it and break it down a lot smoother than it was before.”

San Francisco plays the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 3:05 p.m. CST Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The Commanders elevated Gore from their practice squad with No. 2 running back Antonio Gibson dealing with a toe injury.

Gore has been elevated twice previously this season. He was on the field for 13 offensive snaps and 37 special-teams plays in a 34-31 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 1 and a 40-20 loss to the Chicago Bears on Oct. 5.

Gore played for Alabama in 2015 and 2016 before transferring to Louisiana-Monroe. Since entering the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2019, Gore has played in 13 regular-season games.

The Commanders play the New York Giants at noon Sunday at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.

When Mullens went on injured reserve on Oct. 11 because of a back injury, he was the backup to Kirk Cousins. On Saturday, Minnesota activated Mullens from IR after he returned to practice on Wednesday, and he’ll be the backup for Joshua Dobbs.

The Vikings traded for Dobbs on Oct. 31 after Cousins sustained a season-ending injury in a 24-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 29. Dobbs had started eight games for Arizona this season, but the Cardinals had former No. 1 draft pick Kyler Murray on his way back from injured reserve.

Since entering the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2017, Mullens has started 17 regular-season games.

Minnesota plays the Denver Broncos at 7:20 p.m. Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.
