Former UAB Health System CEO’s op-ed linking Trump, Nazis condemned by Alabama Republican, Democrat leaders

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey “vehemently disagrees” with an op-ed that ran Saturday on AL.com on the dangers of not speaking out against President Donald Trump’s policies that took inspiration from a famous Holocaust poem.

The op-ed by former longtime UAB Health System CEO Will Ferniany was styled after the “First They Came for the Jews” poem by German pastor Martin Niemöller that addressed how failing to condemn the Nazis led to the Holocaust.

“To say the governor vehemently disagrees with the premise of his OpEd is an understatement,” Ivey spokeswoman Gina Maiola posted to X on Monday.

“Comparing the Administration to Nazi Germany is outrageous and a disgrace to the millions of Holocaust victims.”

Ferniany could not be reached for comment.

Doug Jones, a Democrat who represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate from 2018 to January 2021, said that while Ferniany’s piece was “incredibly poignant and incredibly significant,” it is inappropriate to imply a connection between Nazis and the Trump administration.

“I don’t like to compare, and I don’t think it’s appropriate to compare … the rise of the Nazis and Hitler with what is going on today,” Jones said in a video posted to X on Sunday.

“I don’t want to put anyone – ever – in the history of the world in that horrific category,“ the senator continued.

”But authoritarianism and American authoritarianism is a different thing.”

Still, Jones said the op-ed and nationwide demonstrations are a “reaction” against Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, imploring his more than 223,000 followers on X to continue to voice their disapproval of the president’s policies.

“We’ve started the movement, folks. Let’s keep it up.”
