Former UAB basketball star reportedly commits to Big Ten school out of transfer portal
Former UAB basketball star Yaxel Lendeborg has committed to Michigan, according multiple reports Saturday morning from ESPN and On3.
The 6-foot-9 power forward — who has one year of college eligibility remaining — was the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-AAC pick each of the last two seasons. He averaged 17.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.8 blocks this season for a Blazers team that finished 24-13 and reached the quarterfinals of the NIT.
Lendeborg was rated the No. 1 player in the transfer portal during the current cycle, which runs through April 22. He also received interest from Alabama and Auburn, among other schools.
A native of Puerto Rico who grew up in New Jersey, Lendeborg joins a Michigan program that finished 27-10 this season and lost to Auburn in the Sweet 16 under first-year coach Dusty May. The Wolverines last made the Final Four in 2018 and won their lone national championship in 1989.
In addition to the entering the transfer portal, Lendeborg also declared for the 2025 NBA draft earlier this week. It is believed he will turn pro if he receives assurances of being a first-round pick, and thus a guaranteed pro contract.
Players who declare for the NBA draft prior to the April 26 deadline have until June 15 to withdraw from consideration and return to college without affecting their eligibility.
Five other UAB players — forwards Christian Coleman and Bradley Ezewiro and guards Greg Gordon, Efrem “Butta” Johnson and Tyren Moore — have also entered the transfer portal, but have not yet reached a decision on their destinations.
