Former U.S. Open, Masters winner captures Regions Tradition in Monday finish
Angel Cabrera birdied two of his remaining three holes on Monday to win the Regions Tradition at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham.
The PGA Tour Champions tournament’s final round on Sunday was affected by bad weather, and darkness caused the suspension of play before the completion of the round.
Cabrera and Jerry Kelly entered Monday’s conclusion of the fourth round tied for the tournament lead at 18-under par. On the 16th green when play stopped on Sunday, Cabrera had the 16th, 17th and 18th holes remaining in his round. Kelly opened Monday’s play in the 15th fairway with the final four holes to complete.
Cabrera got the lead with a birdie on the par-4 16th. But Kelly came through and did the same to rejoin the Argentine golfer at the top of the leaderboard.
But while Cabrera was closing his round with a birdie on the par-5 18th, Kelly recorded a bogey on the par-3 17th when his par putt lipped out, so that even a birdie on the 18th left Kelly one shot short of Cabrera’s winning score of 20-under par.
Starting with an eagle on the par-5 13th on Saturday, Cabrera played his final 24 holes in 12 under to overtake Kelly. Cabrera’s 268 score was three shots off the tournament record most recently reached by Steve Stricker in his 2023 victory.
The victory earned Cabrera $390,000 of the tournament’s purse of $2.6 million.
The Regions Tradition is the first of the five major tournaments on the PGA Tour Champions schedule. Cabrera won two major titles while playing on the PGA Tour and the European Tour, capturing the U.S. Open in 2007 and the Masters in 2009.
The PGA Tour Champions will be at another major this week, when the Senior PGA Championship tees off on Thursday on the Blue Course at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.
Cabrera won for the second time in six outings on the PGA Tour Champions this season. He also won the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational on April 6.
Kelly also was seeking his second victory of the season after winning the Mitsubishi Electric Classic on April 27.
Y.E. Yang started Monday’s resumption of play in third place, one shot behind the leaders. He finished in third at 18-under par by closing with a birdie, par, bogey and birdie on Monday.
