Former Troy WR Tez Johnson to join Bo Nix at Oregon
Former Troy wide receiver Tez Johnson will transfer to Oregon, he announced Thursday.
Johnson, a former Pinson Valley High School standout, entered the NCAA transfer portal on Dec. 20. He led the Sun Belt Conference champion Trojans with 56 catches for 863 yards in 2022, and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Johnson will be reunited at Oregon with Bo Nix, his adopted older brother. Nix — who began his college career at Auburn — announced earlier this month he will return for his final season with the Ducks in 2023.
Johnson has 141 receptions for 1,809 yards and eight touchdowns in three seasons at Troy. As a first-time transfer, he will be immediately eligible to play at Oregon next season.
Asked Dec. 21 about Johnson entering the portal, Troy coach Jon Sumrall said there were “no hard feelings” on the part of the Trojans’ program.
“I love Tez dearly just like I love all our players,” Sumrall said. “We’re in a different world now. We support guys that feel like this isn’t the best place for them at that time or maybe their journey here is over. There’s no hard feelings on our end. … We’re grateful for his contributions here and wish him nothing but the best moving forward. It’s sad to see guys leave our program, but Tez has fulfilled his obligation.”
Oregon went 10-3 this season, beating North Carolina 28-27 in Wednesday’s Holiday Bowl. Nix passed for 3,594 yards and 29 touchdowns and also rushed for 14 scores in his first year with the Ducks.
The NCAA transfer portal opened on Dec. 5, but players have until Jan. 18 to enter (though there is no deadline to choose a destination).
