Former Tide teammates DeVonta Smith, Jalen Hurts share emotional moment at Super Bowl LIX

As Philadelphia rolled toward a 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith found quarterback Jalen Hurts on the sideline and said, “I love you, boy.”

Smith said the words with tears on his face as he added an NFL championship to the two CFP national championships won by Alabama while he played for the Crimson Tide. NFL Films captured the moment and released the video on Tuesday afternoon.

Smith and Hurts have been teammates for the past four seasons in Philadelphia. But before that, they were teammates at Alabama in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Smith had 12 receptions for 213 yards and one touchdown on passes thrown by Hurts with the Crimson Tide.

The touchdown pass was a 26-yard connection with 25 seconds left to play to beat Mississippi State 31-24 on Nov. 11, 2017.

On Sunday, Smith caught another touchdown pass from Hurts – his 25th in the NFL thrown by the quarterback. The 46-yard score gave Philadelphia a 34-0 lead with 2:40 left in the third quarter.

The play made Smith the first Alabama alumnus with a touchdown reception in the Super Bowl.

As they embraced on Sunday, Smith told Hurts, “This ain’t our last time at this.”

Smith played in three CFP national-championship games at Alabama, with two victories, and Sunday marked his second Super Bowl appearance following the Eagles’ 38-35 loss to Kansas City two years ago.

Smith finished Sunday’s game with four receptions for 69 yards and one touchdown.
