Former Texas A&M QB Max Johnson headed to ACC school
Former Texas A&M quarterback Max Johnson has committed to North Carolina, he announced Wednesday on social media.
Johnson, who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, was the Aggies’ primary starter in 2023 after Conner Weigman was injured. In eight games before suffering his own injury, he threw for 1,452 yards and nine touchdowns with five interceptions.
Johnson — the son of former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson — began his career at LSU, but transferred to Texas A&M after the 2021 season. In 30 games over four seasons (he got the COVID year for 2020 and redshirted in 2022 after playing in just four games), he has thrown for 5,853 yards and 47 touchdowns with 21 interceptions.
As a graduate, he will be eligible to play at North Carolina in 2024 despite being a second-time transfer. With three-year starter Drake Maye expected to enter the NFL draft, the Tar Heels anticipate having an opening at quarterback next season.
Johnson is one of four experienced SEC quarterbacks who have entered the transfer portal this week or plan to do so, along with Mississippi State’s Will Rogers and Vanderbilt’s Ken Seals and A.J. Swann (who split starting duties in 2023). A fifth, Arkansas’ KJ Jefferson, is also reportedly considering making the move.
