Former state-college standouts on the move in MLB trades

The flurry of baseball deals ahead of the Major League trade deadline on Tuesday included three players from Alabama colleges.

Among the players changing organizations were pitchers Mason Barnett from Auburn and Chase Lee from Alabama and outfielder Brandon Lockridge from Troy.

The Texas Rangers traded Lee and minor-league pitcher Joseph Montalvo to the Detroit Tigers for left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin.

In 49 relief appearances with the Crimson Tide, Lee compiled a 9-0 record with a 1.87 earned-run average and nine saves before leaving after three seasons as a sixth-round pick of the Rangers in 2021. Lee has pitched for the Triple-A Round Rock Express in 2022, 2023 and 2024 without taking the final step to the big leagues.

In his 11th MLB season, Chafin worked 41 times out of the Detroit bullpen this season.

Also on Tuesday, the Kansas City Royals traded Barnett and two other minor-leaguers to the Oakland Athletics for pitcher Lucas Erceg.

Barnett struck out 83 in 63.2 innings in his third season at Auburn before leaving as a third-round pick of the Royals in 2022. Working as a starter for the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals, Barnett has a 5-6 record with 109 strikeouts in 91.2 innings this season.

Erceg made 38 appearances out of the Oakland bullpen this season, his second in the Majors.

Also going to the Athletics were pitcher Will Klein and outfielder Jared Dickey. Klein was with the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers after working in five games for Kansas City this season, and Dickey was with the High-A Quad City River Bandits.

The New York Yankees traded Lockridge to the San Diego Padres for pitchers Enyel De Los Santos and Thomas Balboni Jr. on Tuesday.

Lockridge has spent this season with the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. In 72 games, he has hit .295 with 34 stolen bases. Since joining the Yankees organization in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, Lockridge has stolen 135 bases in the minors.

De Los Santos will go into the New York bullpen. In his second pro season, Balboni is pitching in Single-A.
