Former South Alabama safety Yam Banks headed to SEC school

Former South Alabama safety Yam Banks will transfer to Ole Miss, he announced Sunday.

Banks was a three-year starter at Husky (nickel) safety for the Jaguars, totaling 147 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 16 pass breakups, seven interceptions and 2.5 sacks. The Ridgeland, Miss., native — who has one season of eligibility remaining — was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection 2022 and a third-team pick this past season.

Banks is the third South Alabama starter from 2023 to transfer to another school, joining wide receiver Caullin Lacy (Louisville) and cornerback Marquise Robinson (Arkansas). All-Sun Belt safety Jaden Voisin briefly entered the portal, but later pulled out and returned to the Jaguars for his final season.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Banks joins an Ole Miss program that finished 11-2 and won the Peach Bowl in 2023. Among others, the Rebels have also added defensive tackle Walter Nolen (Texas A&M), wide receiver Juice Wells (South Carolina), edge rushers Tyler Baron (Tennessee) and Princely Umanmielen (Florida) and linebacker Chris Paul (Arkansas) through the portal.

South Alabama finished 7-6 in 2023, its second straight winning season. The Jaguars beat Eastern Michigan 59-10 in the 68 Ventures Bowl, the first postseason win in program history.
