Former South Alabama QB signs NFL free agent deal

Former Davidson High School and South Alabama quarterback Cephus Johnson will get an NFL opportunity, albeit at a different position.

Johnson, who finished his college career at Southeastern Louisiana, signed Saturday as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings. According to the team’s free-agent signing announcement, Johnson (6-foot-5, 220 pounds) will begin his professional career as a wide receiver.

Johnson signed with South Alabama in 2017 and won the starting quarterback job as a redshirt sophomore two years later. The Mobile native started the first eight games of the 2019 season for the Jaguars, passing for 900 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions, and also adding four rushing touchdowns.

However, Johnson lost his starting job late that season to Desmond Trotter, and transferred to Southeastern Louisiana the following January. After backing up FCS All-American Cole Kelley in 2021, Johnson split time at quarterback with Eli Sawyer this past season.

In 11 games for the Lions in 2022, Johnson passed for 1,354 yards and 10 touchdowns with five interceptions. He added 488 yards and five touchdowns rushing.

Johnson saw extensive action at wide receiver for Southeastern Louisiana in 2021, catching a pair of touchdown passes and also rushing for four scores. He participated in both quarterback and receiver drills at a number of pre-draft workouts, including South Alabama’s Pro Day on March 20.

Johnson is one of three former Jaguars who got NFL opportunities on Saturday. Cornerback Darrell Luter was drafted in the fifth round by the San Francisco 49ers, while wide receiver Jalen Wayne signed as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills.
