Former South Alabama basketball star transferring to ACC school

Former South Alabama basketball star Barry Dunning will transfer to Pittsburgh.

The 6-foot-6 Dunning was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference pick in 2024-25, when he averaged 15.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. The former Alabama Mr. Basketball out of Mobile’s McGill-Toolen Catholic School helped the Jaguars to a share of the Sun Belt regular-season championship for the first time in 17 years.

On3’s Joe Tipton first reported the move. Dunning later shared a post about the news on his Instagram account Saturday:

Pittsburgh — which went 17-15 this past season and last reached the NCAA tournament in 2023 — will be Dunning’s fourth school in four years. He played sparingly at Arkansas as a freshman and UAB as a sophomore before transferring to South Alabama.

South Alabama also lost starting guard Myles Corey and reserve forwards Julian Margrave and Ethan Kizer to the transfer portal, though none have announced their destinations. The Jaguars have added three players through the portal — forward Peyton Law (Freed-Hardeman) and guards Chaze’ Harris (Life University) and Brian Hawthorne (Rockhurst).
