Former Shelby County middle school teacher arrested on 8 child sex charges

A former Shelby County teacher is under arrest on child sex charges.

Helena police on Tuesday announced the indictment against Richard Bailey Granger. He is charged with seven counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a child and one count of first-degree sodomy.

Granger, 40, was a former teacher at Helena Middle School.

Police Chief Brad Flynn said the investigation began in December when the victim came forward to make a report of the past sexual abuse. The chief said the victim was not a student at the school.

Detectives presented the case to a Shelby County grand jury in August, which returned the indictments against Granger.

Details of his alleged crimes have not yet been made public.

It wasn’t immediately clear when Granger left Alabama, but he was living in Panama City at the time of his arrest.

He was taken into custody in Florida on a fugitive from justice warrant. He remains held in the Bay County Jail pending extradition to Alabama.
