Philadelphia is the NFL’s only unbeaten team four weeks into the 2022 season, and cornerback James Bradberry helped the Eagles stay that way on Sunday.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars trailing Philadelphia 20-14 and at the Eagles 16-yard line, Bradberry sliced in front of wide receiver Christian Kirk to intercept quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s pass with 4:17 left in the fourth quarter.

Philadelphia went on to claim a 29-21 victory to improve to 4-0.

“I try to make sure I tell him once every other week how happy I am that he’s here,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said on Monday, “and I know I definitely said that to him yesterday, I think in the locker room afterwards. That was an unbelievable catch and an unbelievable play by him. There was a lot that went into that play. Kind of talking through it with the defense and watching it on tape, it was a big-time play. And then on top of that, the intelligence of the play that he made, the sheer athleticism that he made on that play as well.

“Yesterday’s game was some of the toughest conditions that I’ve been a part of in the NFL. I can only think of maybe one game that was comparable to how nasty it was. It wasn’t particularly cold, but that wind was blowing, the rain was going, and he made the type of catch you’d expect a wideout to make.”

Bradberry made the interception even though Kirk was not his assignment.

“I was kind of looking at the quarterback, playing in-between,” Bradberry said. “Once he threw it, I broke. We were in the red zone, and my guy was running a post. You don’t see too many posts in the red zone.”

Bradberry made his interception with the Eagles playing without four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay, who sustained an arm injury in the first quarter, and No. 3 cornerback Avonte Maddox, who was out with an ankle injury.

“A lot of times, players just make unbelievable plays,” Sirianni said. “It’s a players’ game, and they make unbelievable plays, and that was an unbelievable play, and he’s had some big ones for us this year so far.”

Sirianni called Bradberry “a very important addition” for the 2022 Eagles.

Bradberry signed with Philadelphia as a free agent on May 18 after the New York Giants released him 10 days earlier for salary-cap considerations. Bradberry had a season left on a three-year, $45 million contract. The Eagles added the cornerback for a one-year, $7.25 million contract.

According to profootballreference.com stats, quarterbacks throwing against Bradberry have a microscopic passing-efficiency rating of 22.2, and he’s been on the field for all put two of the Eagles’ defensive snaps.

“It’s like all the guys we bring in here – the high football character,” Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon said on Tuesday. “He’s extremely intelligent. He can play different styles, which you’re seeing that show up. He’s a team-first guy. He’s another one that’s producing at a high level. It’s hard to complete balls to him. He’s got length. He’s got range. He’s sticky. He’s got ball skills that you’ve seen. He’s a corner with a unique skill set that can kind of do it all. I’m really pleased with where he’s at, and he’s going to continue to ascend, too.”

The interception was the second of the season for Bradberry, who returned the first one 27 yards for a touchdown in the Eagles’ season-opening 38-35 victory over the Detroit Lions.

Bradberry is in his seventh NFL season after entering the NFL as a second-round draft choice of the Carolina Panthers in 2016.

With 96 games and 95 starts, Bradberry ranks second in both stats to Cortland Finnegan among Samford’s NFL alumni. With 17 interceptions, Bradberry is one short of Finnegan’s Samford NFL record.

Before Samford and the NFL, Bradberry earned All-State recognition at Pleasant Grove in 2010.
