Former prep stars draw praise in NBA Summer League
The two former Alabama prep stars chosen in the NBA Draft on June 22 squared off in the NBA 2K24 Summer League in the last of Monday’s six games in Las Vegas.
Former Lee-Huntsville standout Kobe Brown started at forward and had 12 points, eight rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block in the Los Angeles Clippers’ 80-70 victory over the Sacramento Kings.
Former Mountain Brook standout Colby Jones started at forward for Sacramento and was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder. He had 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
“Colby played really well tonight,” said Luke Loucks, the Kings’ Summer League coach. “I challenged him and a couple of other guys to play aggressively. …
“Offensively, we weren’t in attack mode. I thought Colby was probably the one guy that gave us a spark. He caught it, especially in the second half, he caught it, he shot it. He caught it, he attacked. He got to the rim. But we need more of that from our whole group.”
Jones joined Sacramento as the 34th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, four selections after the Clippers chose Brown from Missouri. Jones entered the NBA from Xavier.

Brown opened his pro career with 11 points, nine rebounds, two assists and one steal in Los Angeles’ 105-99 loss to the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.
“I love Kobe – Kobe Brown,” eight-time NBA All-Star and Clippers forward Paul George told NBA TV during Monday night’s game. “Big talent, man. I definitely think a steal. A ton of upside. He just does all the hard work, the dirty work. Plays hard. And he’s one of those young guys I think we need with that energy and just that passion he plays with. He’s fun to watch.”
In his first Summer League game, Jones had 12 points, three rebounds and two steals in the Kings’ 80-76 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night.
