Former pastor charged with stealing $9,000 from Alabama Coroner’s Association

A former pastor who now works at a Florida-based private Christian school is facing theft charges after he allegedly stole nearly $9,000 from the Alabama Coroner’s Association, according to court records.

A filing in Coffee County District Court showed Philip Brian Box, 52, of Elba, was charged Jan. 12 by Alabama District Attorney Steve Marshall’s office with first-degree theft of property.

Box allegedly stole $8,911.07 from the association between April 2022 and Sept. 20, 2022.

A filing showed Box intends to plead guilty to the charge.

Box, who was a minister at the Elba Church of Christ, now works as church relations coordinator for the Florida Panhandle, Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee at Mount Dora Christian Academy, according to the school’s website.

He was appointed chief deputy coroner for Coffee County in 2011.

Prosecutors did not say in court filings how Box had access to the association’s funds.

Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn, the association’s treasurer, could not immediately be reached for comment.
