Former Nebraska QB Logan Smothers headed to Jax State

Former Nebraska quarterback Logan Smothers is returning to his home state.

Smothers announced Tuesday he is transferring to Jacksonville State. The Athens native and former Muscle Shoals High School standout has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

A three-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, Smothers (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) played in 11 games with one start the last two seasons at Nebraska. He completed 33 of 51 passes for 413 yards with no touchdowns and also rushed for 161 yards and two scores.

Smothers joins a Jax State program that is moving up to the FBS level this season as a member of Conference USA. Rich Rodriguez’s Gamecocks open the 2023 season Aug. 26 at home vs. UTEP.

Jax State must find a replacement for two-year starting quarterback Zion Webb, who was a fifth-year senior in 2022. Redshirt freshman Te’Sean Smoot, junior-college transfer Polo Solomon and true freshman Earl Woods were among those who competed for snaps during the spring.
