Former Murphy High, Miami of Ohio football star killed in Mobile crash

A former standout football player at Mobile’s Murphy High School and later Miami University of Ohio was killed in a one-vehicle accident on an Interstate 65 service road Saturday, according to Mobile police.

The accident occurred about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on the service road between Airport Boulevard and Cottage Hill Road. Officers arriving at the scene found a vehicle which had collided with a concrete culvert and the driver had suffered life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates the victim, identified as 27-year-old Zedrick Raymond, was driving south on the service road when he lost control of the vehicle, veered off the roadway and hit the culvert.

Raymond was transported to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Raymond was a team captain at Murphy before signing with Division II Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss. After a year there, he transferred to Independence (Kan.) Community College, the school highlighted in the Netflix series “Last Chance U.” Raymond was a two-year starter for Independence, recording six interceptions during his second season there, good for fourth in the nation.

In 2018, Raymond signed with Miami of Ohio, becoming a two-year starter for the Redhawks and helping them to the Mid-American Conference championship in 2019.

“It’s been one incredible story, what he’s persevered through,” Miami coach Chuck Martin said in a 2020 interview with AL.com. “… This kid’s always just kept pushing forward. He’s been a two-year starter for us and helped us win a lot of games.

“He’s very versatile. There’s been games he’s played over 100 plays because he played on three special teams. There’s nothing you can lay on him in football he hasn’t already been through in life.”

Raymond closed out his college football career playing in the 2020 LendingTree Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium — the same field where he played all of his high school home games.
