Former Maryland linebacker signs with Auburn football out of transfer portal
Auburn football continues to make moves close to the midway point of the spring transfer portal window.
The Tigers announced the signing of Caleb Wheatland Sunday afternoon, adding to a position of need at linebacker.
Wheatland spent three seasons at Maryland, tallying 100 total tackles and seven and half sacks during that time. In 2024, he made 42 tackles and four sacks and had the highest coverage grade on the team among players with 100 or more coverage snaps, per Pro Football Focus.
It supplements a room that lost four seniors from last season, and key contributors like Eugene Asante, Dorian Mausi and Austin Keys. He joins returners Demarcus Riddick and Robert Woodyard Jr. along with newcomers Xavier Atkins, Elijah Melendez and Bryce Deas.
Hugh Freeze mentioned after Auburn’s A-Day spring practice that Auburn could be in the market for a linebacker in the portal to add some experience to an otherwise young room. Wheatland does just that, adding three years of Power Four experience to the room.
