Former LSU quarterback Walker Howard staying in SEC West
Former LSU quarterback Walker Howard is staying in the SEC West to continue his college football career.
Howard committed on Wednesday to Ole Miss, less than a week after leaving the Tigers following his true freshman season. The former four-star recruit played in two games in 2022, including mop-up duty in the season-ending Citrus Bowl.
Howard, the son of former LSU quarterback Jamie Howard, was the Tigers’ third-string quarterback in 2022 behind Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier (both of whom are set to return in 2023). Howard completed 2 of 4 passes for seven yards and also ran for 33 yards on six attempts, and will have four years of eligibility remaining.
However, Howard is best known for the video that he tweeted out in December 2021. The video shows Kelly and Howard standing back-to-back on a platform inside a room covered in LSU logos, with Howard twirling a football while Kelly dances awkwardly to Garth Brooks’ Tiger Stadium staple “Calling Baton Rouge.”
Ole Miss starting quarterback Jaxson Dart is set to return in 2023 after starting all 13 games for the Rebels last season. Dart, a rising junior, transferred to Ole Miss from USC following the 2022 season.
Ole Miss back-up quarterback Luke Altmyer transferred to Illinois, however. The only other quarterbacks returning for the Rebels in 2023 are walk-ons Davin Wydner and Braden Waterman.
