Former Jax State receiver, Pleasant Grove star headed to Sun Belt Conference program

Former Jacksonville State and North Alabama wide receiver Demarcus Lacey has committed to Marshall, he announced on social media.

Lacey, a Birmingham native who starred at Pleasant Grove High School, will reunite with former Jax State offensive coordinator Rod Smith and running backs coach Rod McDowell, who are now in the same roles at Marshall.

Quarterback Zion Turner and linebacker Jibreel Al-Amin are among other former Jax State players who committed to Marshall.

The receiver hauled in eight catches for 84 yards for Jax State after transferring from North Alabama, also running the ball five times for 15 yards.

Before his one-season stint in Jacksonville, Lacey ran the ball for 589 yards and three touchdowns as North Alabama’s leading rusher in 2023, also totaling 21 receptions for 212 yards.

In 2022, he caught 19 passes for 316 yards and ran the ball 34 times for 215 yards to earn third-team All-ASUN Conference honors as a freshman.

Lacey was named Class 5A Back of the Year and was a first-team all-state selection as a senior after totaling over 2,000 yards. He helped lead the Spartans to a pair of Class 5A state championship appearances in 2020 and 2021.
