Former first-rounder from Alabama joins Los Angeles Chargers
Former Alabama All-American Alex Leatherwood has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, the NFL team announced on Wednesday.
Leatherwood did not play during the 2023 NFL regular season, although he spent the entire campaign on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad. Leatherwood had been an unrestricted free agent since the end of the Browns’ season.
Leatherwood earned the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best interior lineman and received unanimous All-American recognition in 2020 for Alabama’s undefeated CFP national-championship team before joining the Crimson Tide’s record-tying six first-round picks in the 2021 NFL Draft as the 17th selection.
Leatherwood started every game of his rookie season for the Las Vegas Raiders, and he played every offensive snap in all but one. Alabama’s starting right guard in 2018 and starting left tackle in 2019 and 2020, Leatherwood lined up at right tackle in his first four NFL games and right guard for the remaining 13 while playing 1,105 offensive snaps in 2021.
On Aug. 31, 2022, the Raiders waived Leatherwood when they reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players. Because Leatherwood’s rookie contract was fully guaranteed, Las Vegas still owed him about $5.905 million.
That obligation went to the Chicago Bears when they were awarded Leatherwood the next day off waivers.
Leatherwood played in four games for the Bears in 2022. Mononucleosis sidelined Leatherwood early in the 2022 season, and he did not make his season debut until Dec. 4 in the Bears’ 13th game.
Leatherwood was waived again at the end of the preseason in 2023. This time, no team claimed him, and he signed with Cleveland for practice-squad duty.
The Chargers did not announce terms for Leatherwood’s contract.
Los Angeles has nine practices remaining in its offseason program before breaking until training camp.
