Former Crimson Tide color analyst now New York Jets general manager
Mobile native Phil Savage is the general manager of an NFL team again after the New York Jets fired Joe Douglas on Tuesday.
A statement released by the team from Jets owner Woody Johnson announcing Douglas’ termination said Savage would serve as New York’s interim general manager for the remainder of the 2024 NFL season.
Savage worked as the Cleveland Browns general manager from 2005 through 2008.
Savage is in his sixth season with the Jets as the team’s senior football advisor.
New York fired coach Robert Saleh on Oct. 8, when the Jets had a 2-3 record in his fourth season. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich became the interim head coach.
On their open date this week, the Jets will carry a 3-8 record into their game against the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 1.
Douglas became the New York general manager in 2019, and the Jets have posted a 30-64 record during his tenure.
A Murphy High School alumnus, Savage is a member of the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame and served as the executive director of the Senior Bowl, the Port City’s annual college all-star game, from 2012 through 2018.
Savage worked as the color analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Eli Gold on the Crimson Tide Sports Network’s radio broadcasts of Alabama football games from the 2009 season through the 2017 campaign. He provided commentary for five Alabama national championships under coach Nick Saban, and in 2017 co-authored a book on Saban’s methods titled “Fourth & Goal Every Day: Alabama’s Relentless Pursuit of Perfection.”
A member of the University of the South Athletics Hall of Fame, Savage was a quarterback and three-time all-conference shortstop at Sewanee.
Savage began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Alabama in 1987, then served as the Crimson Tide’s tight-ends coach for two seasons before moving on to UCLA.
Savage entered the NFL in 1991 as a defensive assistant with the Cleveland Browns, who had Saban as their defensive coordinator.
Savage stayed with the franchise after it moved to Baltimore and eventually became the Ravens’ director of college scouting and director of player personnel. Baltimore defeated the New York Giants 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV on Jan. 28, 2001, during Savage’s time with the team.
