A former Birmingham resident was killed in a shooting during a weekend Juneteenth event in San Diego.

Jonathan Pullum, 20, was among two people shot when authorities said a fight broke out in the crowd during the celebration at Liberty Station.

The shooting happened just before 7 p.m. Saturday. Pullam died at a hospital. A second man is expected to survive.

Pullum attended high school in Birmingham, where his father Terrance Pullam lives. According to a GoFundMe started by the grieving father, his son was set to join the U.S. Navy.

“My son Jonathan Pullum was brutally murdered on the early evening of June 17th. @ Liberty Park during the Juneteenth Festival,” the elder Pullam wrote. “He was only 20 years old and on his way to join the Military “Navy”. But his life was cut short by a coward.”

No arrests have been announced.

Terrance Pullam told The San Diego Union-Tribune his son attended the event with others who got into a fight. He said his son was shot in the back as he walked away.

Jonathan Pullam was also with his brother, 24-year-old Petty Officer 2nd Class Elijah Pullum, who was not injured.

Jonathan Pullum was born and raised in San Diego and finished high school in Birmingham, and later moved back to California. He worked at Target and wanted to follow in brother’s footsteps and join the Navy.

It was not immediately clear which high school he attended.

His father remembered him as a loving, smart, respectful, outgoing and charismatic man.
