Former Birmingham police officer arrested on computer tampering charge

A former Birmingham police officer is under arrest on a felony charge.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Officer Shawn Edward Kimble, 50, on one count of computer tampering-obtaining confidential information.

The indictment was issued April 13 and made public in court records on Tuesday.

Kimble, who joined the department in 2004, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 10:37 a.m. Friday and released at 12:15 p.m. after posting $30,000 bond.

According to the indictment, Kimble illegally accessed the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center database.

It’s illegal to use certain databases, such as ACJIC, without authorization or with authorization but for unauthorized purposes.

Details of the allegations against Kimble were not spelled out in the indictment, and court records do not yet list an attorney to comment on Kimble’s behalf. The criminal case was investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Birmingham police Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said Kimble resigned in March of 2022 while under investigation by the department’s Internal Affairs Division.
