Former Auburn tight end’s NFL season ends without a reception

C.J. Uzomah’s 10th NFL season will not include a reception.

The Philadelphia Eagles placed the former Auburn tight end on injured reserve on Wednesday, sidelining Uzomah for the NFL team’s season finale on Sunday against the New York Giants.

Uzomah sustained an abdominal injury during a 41-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Uzomah played in seven games for Philadelphia this season, with three starts, 132 offensive snaps and 28 special-teams plays. But he was not thrown to once by the Eagles quarterbacks in 2024.

Uzomah joined Philadelphia as a free agent in April. He did not make the active roster coming out of the preseason, but the Eagles brought him back for the practice squad on Oct. 10. After playing in three games as a practice-squad elevation, Uzomah joined the active roster on Dec. 4.

When Philadelphia signed Uzomah to its active roster, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni described the tight end as a “glue guy.”

Philadelphia signed Uzomah to its active roster three days after putting its top tight end, Dallas Goedert, on injured reserve because of a knee problem.

On Wednesday, the Eagles also announced that Goedert had been designated to return. While Goedert remains on injured reserve and ineligible to play, the designation allows him to return to practice and gives Philadelphia 21 days to restore the tight end to its active roster. While the Eagles’ regular season will end on Sunday, Philadelphia has qualified as the No. 2 seed for the NFC playoffs.

A fifth-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015, Uzomah has 192 receptions for 1,881 yards and 16 touchdowns in 113 regular-season games in his NFL career. He also has played in five postseason contests, including Super Bowl LVI.
