Former Auburn tight end returns to the Raiders
Thirteen days after Las Vegas released John Samuel Shenker, the Raiders brought back the former Auburn tight end by signing him to the practice squad, the NFL team announced on Wednesday.
Shenker joined Las Vegas as an undrafted rookie in May. The Raiders let him go when they reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit in August. But Las Vegas kept Shenker with the team as a member of its practice squad.
Shenker did not play during the Raiders’ first four games before Las Vegas released him on Oct. 5. Each NFL team can elevate two practice-squad members to active status for each game.
Shenker rejoined the Raiders one day after he had worked out for the Denver Broncos, an AFC West rival of Las Vegas.
Las Vegas plays the Chicago Bears at noon CDT Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago.
Shenker filled a vacancy created when the Raiders signed practice-squad cornerback Tyler Hall for their active roster as safety Roderic Teamer left the 53 for injured reserve.
In five seasons at Auburn, Shenker set a school record by playing in 62 games, and he also became the Tigers’ career leader for receptions by a tight end with 68 for 779 yards and three touchdowns.
