Former Auburn tight end on XFL-to-NFL tryout list

So far this month, the XFL has issued 10 updates on its players who have received tryouts with NFL teams.

The latest list on Friday evening included former Auburn tight end Sal Cannella, who played for the Arlington Renegades in the 2023 XFL season. Cannella worked out with the Cleveland Browns.

Cannella became the second of the XFL’s players from an Alabama high school or college to receive a tryout invitation. Former Homewood High School standout John Yarbrough, an offensive lineman with the Renegades, got invited to work out with the Washington Commanders.

Of the 67 players who have appeared on the tryout lists, the XFL has announced that 13 have received NFL contracts.

Cannella finished sixth in the XFL with 42 receptions during the regular season. He caught six passes for 89 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown reception in the league championship game, in Arlington’s two playoff victories.

Cannella was the All-USFL tight end for the 2022 season, when he caught 34 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns for the New Orleans Breakers in 10 regular-season games. In the Breakers’ 31-17 loss to the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL semifinals on June 25, Cannella had 12 receptions for 154 yards.

Cannella received a tryout invitation from the Green Bay Packers after that performance and earned a contract with the NFL team, although he was waived at the end of the preseason.

Cannella played at Auburn from 2017 through 2019 as a junior-college transfer. He caught 25 passes for 330 yards and five touchdowns for the Tigers.

Cannella was not drafted after his Auburn career. In 2020 and 2021, he played in the Spring League, and he was in the Miami Dolphins’ NFL training camp in 2021, too.
